An airport transfer in San Juan, Puerto Rico starts at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU), where taxis, Uber and pre-booked cars each pick up in their own places. Taxis charge fixed rates by zone that the airport publishes, from US$12 to Isla Verde and US$17 to Condado before extras. A pre-booked Elly8.net car to Condado is a fixed US$120 in a Business Sedan up to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, all-in per vehicle, with the chauffeur waiting inside arrivals.
Most visitors from the mainland arrive on domestic flights, so there is no customs hall, but SJU still has several terminal areas and busy evening arrival banks. This guide explains where each type of ride picks up, what the published flat rates are across the island, how long the drives take, and how the waiting works when a flight is late.
How does an airport transfer from San Juan airport work?
At SJU, taxis pick up at the arrivals level of Terminal A and Terminal B at fixed zone rates, Uber at designated areas in Terminal A and at columns 16 to 19 for Terminals B and C, and pre-booked cars at Terminals A and B. An Elly8.net chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board, with the flight tracked.
The pickup points above come from the airport's ground transportation page, which also notes that Uber is currently the only rideshare company operating in Puerto Rico. Your flight number tells the desk which terminal you are using.

Step by step with a pre-booked car
- Before you fly. Book with the flight number, the exact hotel or villa address, the number of passengers and bags, and any child seats. Use Reserve now for Condado or the web booker for any other address on the island.
- In the air. The desk tracks the flight. Early or late, the pickup moves with the actual landing.
- At baggage claim. Collect your bags. Evening arrival banks from the East Coast can make the hall slow; complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers it.
- The meet. The chauffeur waits inside the arrivals area with a name board, helps with the bags and walks you to the car at the pre-arranged pickup area. The airport says executive and luxury transport companies pick up and drop off at Terminals A and B.
- The drive. Straight to your address, no meter running, at the fixed price you booked.
- Confirmation and contact. The chauffeur's details arrive before pickup, so you know who is waiting.
Waiting well beyond the included time, parking and tolls are billed at cost, and the desk tells you before extra waiting is charged. See airport meet and greet for how meetings work across the network.
The airport's fixed taxi rates, zone by zone
San Juan is one of the few places where the airport publishes its taxi prices. The fixed-rate sheet, with rates regulated and approved by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company according to the airport, lists a base price per trip, not per person:
| Destination from SJU | Taxi base price per trip | Elly8.net |
|---|---|---|
| Isla Verde (Zone 2) | US$12 | Web booker |
| Condado, Ocean Park, Miramar, Santurce (Zone 3) | US$17 | US$120 to US$315, fixed |
| Old San Juan and the piers (Zone 4) | US$21 | Web booker |
| Convention Center district (Zone 5) | US$17 | Web booker |
| Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot | US$16 | Web booker |
| Dorado | US$62 | Web booker |
| Rio Grande | US$65 | Web booker |
| Fajardo | US$82 | Web booker |
| Ponce | US$127 | Web booker |
Extras on the sheet: US$1 for each additional bag, US$2 for a sixth or seventh passenger, a US$1 late-night charge from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and a US$3 airport fee. Tolls and tips are not included, and the sheet says a metered rate applies for areas between and beyond the tourist zones.
We say it plainly: for a couple with a suitcase each heading to Isla Verde or Condado, an airport taxi is good value, and much cheaper than a private car. The case for booking ahead is different: a named chauffeur waiting rather than a queue, a vehicle class you choose, child seats fitted, gratuity included and one known total. For a longer run to Dorado, Rio Grande or Fajardo with a family and luggage, the gap narrows, and a quote from the web booker gives you a direct comparison.
Uber, buses and shuttles
Uber. The airport lists two pickup areas: one at Terminal A, and one for Terminals B and C at columns 16 to 19. Prices are set by the app and vary with demand, so evening arrival banks and holiday weekends can mean higher fares and longer waits for a car. For a group with lots of luggage, the vehicle that arrives may not fit everything. See chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Public buses. Three bus stops sit on the second level (departures) at Terminals A, D and E. The airport lists route T5 and D53 to Isla Verde and Old San Juan, D53 to Condado's Ashford Avenue and the Convention Center, and E40 to Avenida Pinero. It is the cheapest option and suits a solo traveller with a carry-on in daylight.
Shared shuttles. Shared vans run on fixed schedules and stop for other passengers. They can be good value for one or two people; see chauffeur vs airport shuttle for the trade-offs.
Drive times from SJU
Clear-road routing estimates from the airport:
| Destination | Distance | Clear-road time |
|---|---|---|
| Isla Verde | 5 mi (9 km) | about 14 min |
| Condado | 8 mi (13 km) | about 18 min |
| Old San Juan | 11 mi (18 km) | about 26 min |
| Rio Grande resort area | 19 mi (30 km) | about 31 min |
| Dorado | 25 mi (41 km) | about 44 min |
| Fajardo | 31 mi (50 km) | about 52 min |
Weekday rush hours and rain both slow the expressways around San Juan. The desk plans the pickup around the flight; the drive time is what changes. For the most common route, our guide to San Juan airport to Condado covers the road, the hotel driveways and peak times in detail.

- First Class SUV, US$195; First Class Sedan, US$210. More space and a premium cabin.

Round trips booked together are US$230 to US$600. The fleet page has full details.
Wait times: what to expect on the ground
No one publishes reliable taxi or Uber wait times at SJU, and we will not invent them. What changes the wait is predictable:
- Arrival banks. Several mainland flights landing within an hour fill the baggage hall and the taxi line together.
- Holiday weekends and winter high season. More visitors, the same number of cars.
- Late night. Fewer cars on the road; the taxi sheet adds a US$1 late-night charge.
- Rain. Slower roads and more demand.
A pre-booked car does not shorten the drive, but it removes the wait for a ride: the chauffeur is already inside arrivals, and the waiting after your tracked landing is complimentary.
Old San Juan, the piers and the arena: pickups that need a plan
Some SJU transfers end somewhere a car cannot simply pull up.
Old San Juan. The walled city on the islet west of Condado has steep, narrow streets and very little stopping space. Hotels and guesthouses inside the walls are reached by agreed points: a plaza, a hotel entrance or a corner the chauffeur confirms by message. If you are visiting the forts of the San Juan National Historic Site, Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristobal, the same applies on the way out.
The cruise piers. The taxi sheet groups Old San Juan and the piers in one zone at US$21. For boarding the same day as your flight, give the desk the ship's check-in window; the chauffeur goes from arrivals straight to the agreed pier gate. Several ships in port at once means coaches and taxis everywhere, so a fixed time and gate matter. Our cruise port transfers page explains the routine.
The Coliseo. Flying in for a concert at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot? The taxi sheet lists US$16 from SJU. With bags, the simpler plan is the hotel first, then the show; an evening package from US$475 in a Business Sedan covers the ride there, the wait and the ride back.
Groups, weddings and business arrivals
Wedding guests on many flights. Puerto Rico is a popular destination-wedding choice, and guests rarely land together. The desk can schedule separate pickups for each flight, each tracked, or one Executive Sprinter for a cluster of arrivals.
Conference teams. For the Convention Center district, a Sprinter with cases from the airport is usually simpler than three taxis, and companies can bill rides to a corporate account with monthly invoicing.
Travel agents and hotels. Agents booking clients' transfers can use travel agent accounts, and hotels arranging guest arrivals can use hotel accounts. Either way, each guest gets a tracked flight, a chauffeur inside arrivals and a fixed fare, and the booking appears on one statement rather than a string of taxi receipts.
Departures: the ride back to SJU
Every airport fare is the same fixed price in either direction, so Condado to SJU is also US$120 in a Business Sedan. The airport advises passengers to arrive two and a half hours before departure because of high demand; the desk works the pickup time back from that and the drive. The chauffeur drops you at your airline's departures curb.
Beyond the airport
If you are staying longer, Elly8.net's San Juan car service also offers hourly chauffeurs from US$95 an hour (3-hour minimum), cruise-pier transfers and the six-hour El Yunque rainforest day from US$525. For days across the island, see the Puerto Rico private driver guide, and for ships, cruise port transfers.
Rides in San Juan, Puerto Rico are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Nearby, Elly8.net also serves Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
