An Ibiza taxi is a licensed, metered car with fares set by the island authorities: the published rate is €1.21 per kilometre in the daytime and €1.47 at night and on public holidays, plus a €4.00 service-start supplement and €2.00 for trips to or from the port or airport. Suitcases travel free. For most short trips, a taxi is the quickest and cheapest way around the island.
The problem is supply, not price. From June to September the island's airport taxi fleet roughly doubles, but demand rises faster, and the queues gather at exactly the wrong moments: arrival peaks at the airport and the hours after the clubs close. App rides help at the margin without changing the basic shortage. This guide sets out the numbers and the moments when a pre-booked car is worth it.
How much does a taxi cost in Ibiza?
Ibiza taxis run on a meter at €1.21 per km by day and €1.47 per km at night and on holidays, with a €4.00 service-start supplement, €2.00 for port or airport trips and €1.45 for a radio-telephone booking. Waiting costs €21.70 an hour by day and €26.57 at night. Luggage is carried free of charge.
These rates are the ones Aena publishes on its Ibiza airport taxi page, citing the fares approved in the Balearic official bulletin (B.O.I.B.) of 29 April 2023. The page also advises taking a taxi only from the signed rank at the terminal and asking for a receipt if you have a complaint.
To show what that means in practice, here is our arithmetic using those published rates and our routed road distances. These are not quotes: the meter also counts waiting time in traffic, and the night band changes the result.
| Trip | Road distance (routed) | Daytime meter, before waiting | Night meter, before waiting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport to Ibiza Town | 7 km / 5 mi | about €14.50 | about €16.30 |
| Airport to Playa d'en Bossa | 4 km / 3 mi | about €10.80 | about €11.90 |
| Airport to Sant Antoni | 22 km / 14 mi | about €32.60 | about €38.30 |
| Airport to Santa Eulària | 22 km / 14 mi | about €32.60 | about €38.30 |
| Ibiza Town to Sant Antoni | 16 km / 10 mi | about €23.40 (no airport supplement) | about €27.50 |
The figures include the €4.00 start supplement and, for airport trips, the €2.00 airport supplement. They show why a taxi is good value for one to four people on a short run. They also show that the meter is not the issue in summer.
Why the summer queues happen
Aena states that Ibiza Airport has a permanent fleet of 69 taxis all year, three of them adapted for wheelchair users, and that from June to September 70 more operate, bringing the total to 139. That is a big seasonal increase, and it is still small against an airport where many flights land within a few hours on summer weekend afternoons.
The same squeeze happens around the island at night. The big clubs sit in Ibiza Town, Playa d'en Bossa and Sant Rafel, in the middle of the island, and they empty at similar times. Thousands of people look for a ride from the same few roads at once, many of them heading in different directions to villas and hotels across the island.
We cannot give you a wait time, because it depends entirely on the day and the hour. What we can say is that in the off-season a taxi from a rank is usually easy, and that on a Saturday in August at closing time it is not.
What rideshare changes, and what it does not
Uber operates in Ibiza, and its own Ibiza guide tells riders that pickup times may be longer than in larger cities, suggesting a ride booked in advance instead. That is a fair summary. App rides on the island use licensed hire vehicles with drivers, the price is shown before you confirm, and it changes with demand.
App rides help when you want to see a price first and avoid a phone call in Spanish. They do not add enough cars to remove the shortage at peak times, and the price moves up when demand does. Rideshare prices are not published, so we do not quote one. For a scenario-by-scenario look at the app, the taxi and a private car, read our companion post, Ibiza: Uber vs taxi vs private car.
Ordering a taxi by phone
You do not have to stand at a rank. Ibiza's taxis also take bookings by phone, and Aena lists the Radio Taxi number on its taxi page for travellers who need an adapted vehicle that is not at the rank. A phone booking adds the €1.45 radio-telephone supplement to the meter. It works well for a planned daytime trip, such as a lunch reservation or a ferry, made a little in advance. On the busiest summer nights, though, phone lines and dispatch face the same shortage as the ranks, so a call at closing time may still mean a long wait. Plan the critical rides earlier in the day rather than at the moment you need them.
Buses: the budget option
Ibiza has a public bus network operated under the island's concession, with airport lines and summer night lines. The Alsa Ibiza fares page lists the airport fares: Ibiza Town to the airport costs €3.50 by card or QR code and €4.90 in cash, and Sant Antoni to the airport €4.00 and €5.60. Night lines, named with a "D", carry their own special fares on the same page.
For a solo traveller staying near a stop, the bus is the cheapest way around. For villas inland, which are often down unpaved lanes away from any route, it rarely works. Paying on board by bank card, or with a QR ticket bought in advance, is cheaper than cash on every airport line, so keep a card handy if you take the bus.
When to book a car instead
Arriving in summer. A pre-booked Ibiza airport transfer means a chauffeur waiting in arrivals with your name, whatever the length of the rank queue. Elly8.net fares from the airport to Ibiza Town are US$120 in a business sedan, US$160 in a business SUV, US$195 in a First Class SUV, US$210 in a First Class Sedan and US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and per vehicle. For more on arrival options, including the airport buses, see our post on Ibiza airport transfers for North American travellers.
Club nights. The evening out and event night package costs from US$475 in a business sedan to US$950 in an Executive Sprinter. It covers dinner, the club and the ride home, with a return time you set and can change through the 24/7 desk. The car comes back for you; you are not on the verge at dawn with a phone at 3% battery. See concert and festival transportation.
Villa addresses. Many villas are a house name on a numbered lane, reached by a dirt track. Send the GPS pin and gate details when you book and the chauffeur arrives knowing the way. Choose an SUV for unpaved access.
Groups. A taxi carries a small group; an Executive Sprinter with driver carries up to 12 passengers and 12 bags, so a party arrives and leaves together. As arithmetic only, the airport-to-Ibiza Town Sprinter fare of US$315 shared by ten is about US$32 each; Elly8.net prices are per vehicle.
Beach days and island tours. Hourly hire costs US$95 in a business sedan, US$120 in a business SUV, US$145 in a First Class SUV, US$155 in a First Class Sedan and US$190 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. Our post on Ibiza day tours with a private driver maps out routes.
Area by area: how easy is it to get a ride?
The island is small, but the experience of finding a car varies a lot by where you are staying.
Ibiza Town and Talamanca. The best-served area. Ranks near the port and the marinas, short distances to the airport (about 7 km by road) and to Playa d'en Bossa, and plenty of cars outside the peak hours. Dalt Vila's upper streets are largely closed to traffic, so any car, taxi or chauffeured, stops at the gates or the nearest permitted point.
Playa d'en Bossa. Close to the airport, about 4 km by road, and to several of the big clubs. Easy in the daytime; at closing time it is the centre of the scramble.
Sant Antoni. About 16 km (10 mi) from Ibiza Town and 22 km (14 mi) from the airport by our routed estimates. The bay and the sunset strip are busy in the evening, and the town has its own taxis, but cross-island trips late at night, for example back from a club in the middle of the island, are where waits build up.
Santa Eulària and the east. About 16 km (10 mi) from Ibiza Town, with a calmer pace and family hotels. Daytime taxis are fine; late-night returns from Ibiza Town or Playa d'en Bossa need planning in summer.
The north and the inland villas. Around Sant Joan, Sant Carles and Sant Llorenç, houses are spread out, many down unpaved lanes, and taxis rarely pass by. You will be calling for a car rather than finding one. This is where a pre-booked car, or a car held by the hour for the evening, is most useful.
When a taxi is the right call
We would not tell everyone to book a car. Take a taxi if you are one to four people with normal luggage going a short distance outside the summer peaks, or in the daytime between towns on the main roads. In May, June outside weekends, or October, a taxi from the rank is usually straightforward and costs far less than a booked car. The same is true for a quick hop from Ibiza Town to Talamanca or Playa d'en Bossa for lunch.
A sensible split for most summer visitors is to pre-book the moments that cannot fail, the arrival, the departure and the big night out, and use taxis, buses and the app for everything in between. That keeps the budget sensible and takes the stress out of the three journeys where a long queue would actually spoil the trip. Travel agents and villa managers can arrange this on account through our travel agent accounts.

Frequently asked questions
Are taxis in Ibiza expensive?
Not by the kilometre. The published meter rate is €1.21 per km by day and €1.47 at night, plus a €4.00 start supplement and €2.00 for airport or port trips. By our arithmetic, the airport to Ibiza Town is around €14 to €16 on the meter before waiting. The challenge in summer is finding one.
How many taxis are there at Ibiza airport?
Aena lists a permanent fleet of 69 taxis all year, three adapted for wheelchair users, with 70 more from June to September for a total of 139. Take taxis only from the signed rank and ask for a receipt if you have a complaint.
Is Uber available in Ibiza?
Yes. Uber operates in Ibiza through licensed hire vehicles, and its own guide notes pickup times can be longer than in big cities. Prices are shown in the app before you confirm and change with demand, so compare them with the taxi meter.
How do we get home after a club night?
Taxis and app rides are scarce at closing time in summer. The Elly8.net evening out and event night package, from US$475 in a business sedan to US$950 in an Executive Sprinter, includes the ride home at a time you set and can change through the 24/7 desk.
Is luggage extra in an Ibiza taxi?
No. Aena's Ibiza taxi information states that suitcases and pets are carried free of charge. Supplements apply for the start of service, airport or port trips and radio-telephone bookings. Elly8.net fares include luggage within the vehicle's capacity.
Can a car reach a villa on a dirt track?
Usually, yes. Send the villa name, the GPS pin, gate arrangements and the house manager's number when you book, and choose a Business SUV or First Class SUV for ground clearance. If a lane is too narrow for a Sprinter, the desk will suggest two SUVs.
