A Calgary taxi hailed on the street or called by phone runs on a meter that the City of Calgary caps: no more than C$4.50 for the first 120 metres and C$0.23 for each additional 120 metres in moving traffic. The City's own examples put a 5 km ride at about C$13.85 and a 10 km ride at about C$23.44. Booked through an app, the same taxi company may charge a different rate, and that rate is allowed to rise when demand rises.
That split between a capped meter and a flexible app price is the most useful thing to understand about getting around Calgary by taxi. This guide from the Elly8.net reservations desk explains how the meter works, where the stands are, what the airport adds, and the trips where a pre-booked car at a fixed price is the better choice. Taxi fares here are in Canadian dollars; Elly8.net prices are in US dollars, per vehicle.
How much does a taxi cost in Calgary?
A street-hail or phone-dispatch taxi in Calgary is capped at C$4.50 for the first 120 metres plus C$0.23 per additional 120 metres. The City estimates a 5 km trip at C$13.85 and a 10 km trip at C$23.44. From YYC to downtown the airport puts the metered fare at about C$40 to C$45.
The cap comes from the City's taxi, limousine and rideshare rates page, which also says companies may charge less than the maximum and that you have the right to ask what rate is being charged before you accept the ride. Regulated rates are set through a Taxi Cost Index and combine the distance travelled with the time the trip takes, so a crawl along Macleod Trail at rush hour costs more than the same distance on an open road.
| Trip | What you pay | How the price is set | Source |

Three ways to get a Calgary taxi, and why the price can differ
Calgary has three doors into the same taxi system, and they do not all lead to the same price.
Street hail or a taxi stand. You flag a cab or walk up to a stand, and the meter runs at the regulated rate or less. Payment happens inside the car. This is the classic downtown taxi, and it is the one the City's cap protects.
Phone dispatch. You call a taxi company and a car is sent. The City's rates page groups this with street hails as the traditional service that the regulated rate covers.
An app. Taxi companies, limousine companies and rideshare companies with an app approved by the City can charge any rate and change it with consumer demand and market conditions. The City names the holiday season, sporting events and the Stampede as times when app rates climb. The customer sees the rate before accepting, and the City's advice is direct: when app rates are high, it may be better to street hail or call a taxi and pay the regulated rate.
That last point is worth remembering on a busy night. If an app quote looks high after a Flames game or a Stampede evening, a taxi from a stand may well be cheaper, provided there is one in the queue.
Taxi stands, late nights and Stampede week
The City maps its permanent and late-night taxi stands on its taxi stands page, and notes that stand locations are under review, so check the map on the night rather than relying on memory. The same page explains that during the Stampede some bars and restaurants set up their own taxi stands, with hours managed by the venue.
Stands work best when the cars are coming to you. On an ordinary weeknight on 17th Avenue SW or Stephen Avenue, a stand usually clears quickly. The picture changes when thousands of people leave the same place at once. The Calgary Stampede runs from July 9 to 18, 2027, ten days of rodeo, grandstand shows, concerts and parties at Stampede Park and across the city, and the queue at the end of a grandstand show can be long. The same is true at the Scotiabank Saddledome after a game or concert.
On those nights the question is not only the fare but the wait. A pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point a short walk from the gate removes the queue from the evening. The Elly8.net evening out and event night package runs from US$550 in a Business Sedan to US$1,100 in an Executive Sprinter, and an hourly chauffeur is US$110 to US$220 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. See event transportation for how pickups around closures are planned.
Taxis at YYC
Calgary International Airport is the one place where a taxi costs noticeably more than the city examples suggest. The City explains why: the rate from the airport is higher because the fare covers the departure fees charged by the Calgary Airport Authority. The airport's taxis and sedans page lists the taxi pick-up fee at C$5.10 plus GST at the terminal and a drop-off fee of C$4.60 plus GST on the airport campus.
The practical details from the same page:
- Where: taxi stands are on the Arrivals level at Doors 1, 9 and 15.
- What it costs: the approximate metered fare to downtown is C$40 to C$45 under normal driving conditions.
- Who fits: airport taxis take four or five adults, and vans are available for excess luggage.
- The sedan option: on-demand airport sedans wait beside the taxi stands and charge flat zone fares, C$68.75 to downtown, with a C$11 airport access fee listed per pick-up.
For a deeper look at the airport choice, including the ride apps and the express bus, read YYC taxi vs Uber vs private car. The Elly8.net fare from YYC to downtown Calgary is US$105 in a Business Sedan, US$140 in a Business SUV and US$275 in an Executive Sprinter, the same fixed price in either direction.
When a Calgary taxi is the right call
We book cars for a living, and we still tell people to take a taxi in plenty of situations. A taxi is the sensible choice when:
- You are one or two people with light bags going a few kilometres across downtown, the Beltline, Kensington or Inglewood. At the City's example rates, a 5 km ride is under C$15.
- You need a car in the next ten minutes and there is a stand nearby or a cab in sight. Pre-booking is for planned trips.
- It is an ordinary weekday with no game, no show and no snowstorm. The meter will be close to the City's examples.
- App prices are surging and you can reach a taxi stand. The regulated rate does not surge.
Transit also deserves a mention. Calgary Transit's adult cash fare is C$4.00, valid for 90 minutes, and a day pass is C$12.65, according to its fares page. For one traveller staying near a CTrain station, that is very good value.
When a pre-booked car wins
A pre-booked chauffeur is not the cheapest way to cross Calgary. It is the most predictable, and in some situations predictability is what you are paying for.
Late arrivals. A flight that lands at 11:40 p.m. after a delay meets a taxi queue that may or may not be moving. An Elly8.net airport transfer tracks the flight, the chauffeur waits inside arrivals with a name board, and there is complimentary waiting after a tracked landing.
Groups and heavy bags. Four people with ski bags or golf clubs rarely fit in one taxi. A Business SUV takes up to six passengers and six bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve with twelve bags, per the fleet guide. The YYC to downtown fare of US$140 in a Business SUV is per vehicle; split four ways it works out at US$35 each, which is arithmetic for comparison only.
Tight schedules. A morning of meetings between downtown towers, lunch, and a flight out of YYC is easier with one car on stand-by than with three separate taxi hails. The corporate roadshow day runs from US$990 in a Business Sedan to US$1,980 in an Executive Sprinter.
Corporate billing. Taxi receipts arrive one at a time. A corporate account puts every ride on one monthly invoice with traveller names and cost centres.
Mountain trips. Calgary taxis are built for the city. For Banff, a fixed one-way car from YYC to the town of Banff starts at US$370 in a Business Sedan, and the 10-hour Banff and Lake Louise day trip from Calgary starts at US$1,015. See our Banff car service page for park access rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the taxi meter rate in Calgary?
The City of Calgary sets a maximum regulated rate of C$4.50 for the first 120 metres and C$0.23 for each additional 120 metres when the taxi is moving faster than 20.24 km/h. Companies may charge less, and you can ask the driver which rate applies before the ride starts. The cap covers street hails and traditional phone dispatch.
Why do app prices for taxis change in Calgary?
The City allows taxi, limousine and rideshare companies with an approved app to set their own rate and change it with demand. Busy periods such as the holidays, sporting events and the Stampede push those rates up. The price is shown before you accept, and you can still hail or call a taxi at the regulated rate.
