Vancouver to Whistler is about 122 km (76 mi) from downtown to Whistler Village, roughly two hours on a clear road up the Sea-to-Sky Highway. A coach seat is the cheapest way for one person; a rental car gives freedom but puts you behind the wheel on a mountain highway; a private car costs more but leaves from your hotel door. With Elly8.net, a private 10-hour Sea-to-Sky day trip starts at US$1,015 per vehicle, and one-way transfers from any Vancouver address are priced in the web booker.
The right answer depends on three things: how many of you there are, what you are carrying, and whether you are staying in Whistler or coming back the same day. This guide takes each option in turn, then gives a verdict for the most common trips. Rides in Whistler are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.
What is the best way to get from Vancouver to Whistler?
For one person with light bags, the coach is cheapest. For a family or group with skis, a private car usually costs less per person and goes door to door. Driving yourself suits confident winter drivers who want a car all week. Floatplanes and helicopters are fast but weather-dependent with strict luggage limits.
Tourism Whistler describes Whistler as a two-hour drive from Vancouver along the Sea-to-Sky Highway and lists coach and shuttle buses, private vehicle charters, helicopter charters and a seasonal floatplane as the ways to get there from the city, plus car rentals for those who drive.
| Option | Price | Time downtown to Whistler | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coach or shuttle bus | per seat, set by the operator | longer than driving, with stops | standard bags | solo travellers, light bags |
| Rental car | daily rate, fuel and parking | about 2 hours, you drive | as much as fits | week-long stays with plans outside the village |
| Seasonal floatplane | adult fares listed from C$209 | short flight, plus transfers | 25 lb (11.3 kg) per person | summer couples with soft bags |
| Helicopter charter | listed at C$5,850 plus tax per helicopter, up to 5 | about 30 minutes in the air | limited | time-critical or special trips |
| Elly8.net private car | one way quoted in the web booker; 10-hour day trip from US$1,015 | about 2 hours, door to door | up to 12 bags in a Sprinter | families, groups, ski gear, day trips |

The coach or shuttle
Scheduled coaches run between Vancouver, the airport and Whistler. For one traveller with a single bag, a seat is almost always the cheapest way up the highway, and you can read or sleep on the way. The trade-offs are the timetable, the stops and the drop: coaches set down at central stops, so you may still need a taxi or a walk with your bags to the hotel.
Count the seats before deciding. A coach is priced per person, a private car per vehicle. A family of four with skis buys four seats and still handles the bags at each end; the same family in an Elly8.net Business SUV pays one fare and steps out at the hotel driveway. Our chauffeur vs shared airport shuttle guide explains the general maths.
Driving yourself
Driving the Sea-to-Sky is a pleasure on a clear summer day and a serious drive in winter. The Province of British Columbia says drivers must obey winter tire and chain signs on signed highways from October 1 to April 30, and the Sea-to-Sky is a signed route, so a winter rental must have the right tires. Conditions can change between Squamish and Whistler within the hour; check DriveBC before you set off.
Once you arrive, the car mostly sits. Whistler Village is built around a pedestrian stroll, BC Transit buses connect the village with Creekside and the neighbourhoods, and the free village shuttles cover the Upper Village year-round. Check your hotel's parking charge before booking a rental for a full week. A rental makes most sense if you plan trips beyond Whistler, such as Pemberton or a return via the coast, or if you are touring the province.
Our chauffeur vs renting a car guide sets out the costs most people forget: fuel, parking, insurance excess and the time spent collecting and returning the car.
The floatplane and the helicopter
Floatplane. Tourism Whistler's floatplane page describes a seasonal scheduled service between Vancouver and Whistler in the summer months, with adult fares listed from C$209 and check-in at least 40 minutes before departure. The luggage limit, 25 lb (11.3 kg) per passenger including carry-on items, rules it out for most ski trips and family holidays. It is a superb way to arrive for a couple travelling light.
Helicopter. Tourism Whistler's helicopter page lists a flight time of about 30 minutes, year-round and weather dependent, at C$5,850 plus tax per helicopter for up to five passengers. It is for occasions and tight schedules, and it still needs a weather back-up plan on the ground.
Elly8.net books the car, not the flight. If you fly one way, a car to or from the dock or heliport is quoted in the web booker, and the desk times it around your flight.
The private car
A private car is the only option that goes from your Vancouver hotel lobby to your Whistler hotel driveway with nothing in between. The chauffeur loads the bags and skis, the drive takes about two hours on a clear road, and you can stop where you like if you ask at booking.
What it costs. One-way transfers from downtown Vancouver, a cruise terminal or any other address are priced in the Elly8.net web booker for your exact pickup. From the airport, the fixed fare is US$370 in a Business Sedan, US$485 in a Business SUV and US$965 in an Executive Sprinter, the same in either direction; our YVR to Whistler car service guide covers that route in detail.
How it compares with local limousine minimums. British Columbia's Passenger Transportation Board sets minimum Sea-to-Sky limousine fares that licensed operators must charge for one-way trips between Vancouver and Whistler, in either direction: C$245 for a sedan limousine, C$295 for a mid-size limousine such as an SUV or van, C$360 for a stretch car, C$470 for a stretch SUV and C$545 for a limo bus, before GST. Operators may also add disclosed extras such as meet and greet or tolls. Elly8.net prices are in US dollars, with taxes and standard gratuity already included, so compare the final totals.
The day trip. Not staying overnight? The Sea-to-Sky day trip from Vancouver is a fixed 10-hour package with one chauffeur for the whole day: US$1,015 in a Business Sedan, US$1,290 in a Business SUV, US$1,520 in a First Class SUV, US$1,660 in a First Class Sedan and US$2,025 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. That allows the drive both ways, several hours in the village or on the PEAK 2 PEAK, and a stop on the way. The package is booked on the Vancouver car service page.
Stops worth making on the Sea-to-Sky
The highway follows Howe Sound before climbing into the mountains, and Squamish, about halfway, is the natural stop. The Sea to Sky Gondola rises from the highway above Howe Sound and is the most popular break in the drive. With a coach, stops are whatever the timetable allows; with a rental car you pay for parking and drive on; with a private car the chauffeur waits. For a long stop, add it as an hourly chauffeur leg, from US$110 an hour in a Business Sedan with a three-hour minimum, or use the day trip package.
When to leave Vancouver
Timing matters as much as the mode. In ski season, Friday afternoons northbound and Sunday afternoons southbound are the slowest drives of the week, and a snowfall overnight can slow the morning run as well. A mid-morning departure from a downtown hotel usually avoids the city rush and arrives in time for lunch and an afternoon on the mountain. For a coach, check the timetable for your day; for a private car, tell the desk when you want to arrive and it sets the pickup accordingly. Whatever the traffic, the Elly8.net fare does not change once booked.
Verdicts for the common trips
Solo traveller, one bag, daytime. Take the coach. It is the cheapest and simplest.
Couple in summer, travelling light. The floatplane one way and the coach or a car the other is a memorable combination, if the luggage limit works for you.
Family of four with skis. A private Business SUV: one fare, door to door, child seats on request, skis inside the vehicle.
Group of 8 to 12. An Executive Sprinter. The group travels together with all its gear inside, one fare covers everyone, and the per-person gap with coach seats narrows as the group grows, especially once you count taxis at each end.
Day visit from a Vancouver hotel or cruise. The 10-hour Sea-to-Sky day trip. If you are flying out of YVR or sailing from Canada Place, see cruise port transfers for how we time pickups around sailings.
Week-long stay with trips beyond Whistler. A rental car, driven by someone comfortable with winter mountain roads.
Once you are in Whistler, our Whistler taxi guide explains getting around the valley without a car.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to drive from Vancouver to Whistler?
About two hours on a clear road for roughly 122 km (76 mi) from downtown Vancouver to Whistler Village, matching Tourism Whistler's description of a two-hour drive. Snow, weekend volume or a collision closure on the Sea-to-Sky Highway can add time, especially on Friday and Sunday afternoons in ski season.
How much is a private car from Vancouver to Whistler?
One-way transfers from downtown Vancouver and other city addresses are priced in the Elly8.net web booker for your exact pickup. From YVR the fixed fare is US$370 in a Business Sedan to US$965 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. A 10-hour Sea-to-Sky day trip from Vancouver starts at US$1,015.
Is the coach or a private car cheaper for a family?
A coach is priced per seat and a private car per vehicle. For one or two people the coach is cheaper. For a family of four or more with skis, the gap narrows because one Business SUV fare covers everyone and replaces the taxis at each end, and it goes door to door with child seats on request.
Do I need winter tires to drive to Whistler?
Yes, from October 1 to April 30 on signed BC highways, which include the Sea-to-Sky. The Province says drivers must obey winter tire and chain signs during that period. If you book a car with a chauffeur, the vehicle must meet the rule and you do not drive the road yourself.
Can we do Whistler as a day trip from Vancouver?
Yes. The fixed 10-hour Sea-to-Sky day trip runs from US$1,015 in a Business Sedan to US$2,025 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, with one chauffeur for the day. That allows the drive both ways, several hours in Whistler and a stop such as the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds go back to the original card. If your plans change because of a road closure or a weather forecast, contact the desk early and we move the pickup.
