A vintage car wedding usually means one classic car for the couple: a pre-war tourer, a 1950s saloon or a 1960s convertible, chosen because it looks right in the photographs and says something about the couple. It is one of the most personal transport choices on a wedding day, and also the one with the most practical limits. Old cars are slower, less tolerant of heat, rain and traffic, often have no air conditioning and sometimes do not start.

Elly8.net does not book vintage vehicles. Our partner vehicles must be four model years old or newer, and seven years or newer for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley, which rules classics out by design. What we do book is everything around the classic car: the wedding party, the parents, the guests, the airport arrivals and a modern premium car as a backup or alternative. This guide covers how to plan a vintage car well, and how to build the rest of the day's transport around it.

What should you know before booking a vintage wedding car?

Plan for a short route, a slower car and a backup. Ask the owner or company about the car's age and condition, who drives it, whether it is licensed and insured for paid hire, what happens if it breaks down and what the weather plan is. Keep the classic car for one or two photogenic legs and use modern vehicles for longer drives.

The single most useful decision is how far the classic car will actually drive. Many couples use it for the most photographed moments only: from the getting-ready location to the ceremony, or from the ceremony to a nearby photo spot. A modern car or a Sprinter then takes over for the longer leg to the reception, where speed, air conditioning and reliability matter more than looks.

The practical limits of a classic car

Capacity. Many classic cars seat the couple and little else. A wedding dress with a long train takes room, and some older cars have narrow doors and high sills. Ask to see the rear seat, not just the bodywork.

Speed and roads. A car designed seventy years ago may not be comfortable at modern highway speeds. Plan routes on city streets and avoid fast, busy roads.

Heat. Most vintage cars have no air conditioning, and some do not like long idles in summer traffic. A July afternoon in a closed classic saloon can be hard on everyone, including the engine.

Rain. Convertibles need a roof plan. Some classic cars are not driven in heavy rain at all. Ask what the owner does if the forecast is bad.

Reliability. Even well-kept classic cars can fail to start or overheat. The question is not whether the owner has a perfect record, but what the backup plan is when it happens.

Questions to ask before you sign

Write these down and get the answers in writing.

  1. What exactly is the car? Make, model and year, with recent photos of the actual vehicle.
  2. Who drives it? The owner, an employee or a hired driver, and what experience they have with that car.
  3. Is the car licensed and insured to carry paying passengers? Private insurance usually does not cover hire and reward. Ask for evidence.
  4. What is included? Hours, decorations, a red carpet, a champagne stop at the venue. Ask whether decorations can be attached to the bodywork.
  5. What is the breakdown plan? A second car, a recovery arrangement, or a refund? How quickly can a replacement arrive?
  6. What is the weather plan? Roof up, a different car, or a cancellation with refund?
  7. What are the cancellation terms? Classic car owners may ask for a deposit because they turn away other weddings for your date; read the refund terms.
  8. What time does the car arrive and leave? Many charge by the hour or by a fixed block.

If you also book modern vehicles through Elly8.net, our terms are fixed: free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% within 72 hours; 50% within 48 hours; 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show; refunds to the original card.

Choosing the right classic for your day

Not every classic car suits every wedding. A few questions narrow the choice quickly.

Open or closed? A convertible gives the best photographs on a dry, mild day and the worst experience in rain, wind or strong sun. A closed saloon is the safer choice for spring and autumn, when the weather can turn in an hour.

How tall is the door? Pre-war cars often have high running boards and small doors. Practise getting in and out in shoes, and think about the dress.

What colour works? White and ivory cars disappear against a white dress in some light; darker colours and two-tone paint often photograph better. Ask the photographer, who will have opinions about angles and backgrounds.

Where will it park? A classic car looks best parked at the venue entrance, but some venues have narrow drives, gravel or steep ramps that owners avoid. Ask the venue and the owner before the day, not on it.

How will it be photographed? Agree with the photographer which shots need the car: arriving, the door, the exit, a portrait. That list tells you how long the car needs to stay, which in turn sets the booking block and the cost.

A clear brief also helps the modern vehicles. Our desk can time the Sprinter and SUVs to arrive after the classic car's photographs, so the guests are not in the background of every shot.

Building the day: the classic car plus modern vehicles

The classic car carries two people. Everyone else still needs to move, and that is where a chauffeured booking fits. Per-vehicle capacities from the Elly8.net fleet:

For a modern alternative to the classic car itself, our Rolls Royce limo guide explains how that car is planned. If the wedding party is large, the Sprinter van limousine guide shows when one twelve-seat vehicle beats two SUVs.

A sample timeline with a vintage car

Build it backwards from the ceremony.

  • Getting ready. The classic car arrives early and parks where the photographer wants it. Allow time for photos with the car before anyone gets in.
  • To the ceremony. A short, slow route on city streets. The wedding party travels ahead in the Executive Sprinter so they are in place when the couple arrives.
  • Ceremony. The classic car waits for the exit photos.
  • Photo stop. One location close by, with parking for the classic car and the Sprinter.
  • To the reception. If it is more than a short drive, the couple switches to the modern car while the classic car is released. The parents' SUV and the Sprinter follow.
  • End of the night. A Sprinter run from the venue to the guests' hotel, booked by the hour or as a separate transfer.

Booking the modern vehicles by the hour keeps them with you through the day. The hourly chauffeur service has a three-hour minimum on the price list; book enough hours to cover the ceremony, the photos and the reception arrival, plus a buffer.

What the modern vehicles cost

Published Elly8.net hourly rates, fixed and all-in, include chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity, with tolls and parking billed at cost. For an Executive Sprinter they run from US$190 an hour in Nashville and Denver to US$220 an hour in Toronto, with US$200 in Chicago and US$210 in New York City. A Business SUV for parents is US$120 to US$140 an hour across the same cities, and a First Class Sedan, a sensible backup for the couple, US$155 to US$180. The Rolls-Royce, Maybach and stretch vehicles are quoted in the booker for your date.

As an example, five hours of an Executive Sprinter in Chicago is US$1,000, and five hours of a Business SUV is US$625: US$1,625 for the published part of the day, per vehicle, not per person. Our guide to how much it costs to rent a limo explains how such totals are built.

City hall weddings and a classic car

A civil ceremony at a city hall is short and appointment-based, which suits a classic car very well: one short drive in, photos on the steps, one short drive out. In New York City, the Office of the City Clerk books in-person ceremony and licence appointments through its Project Cupid system and does not accept walk-ins, so give the transport plan the appointment time rather than a hopeful estimate. In Ontario, the province's getting married page sets out licence and ceremony rules. Check where you marry before you fix the timings.

Parking for a classic car near a city hall can be harder than the drive itself. Ask the owner where they plan to wait, and have the modern vehicles stage separately.

Destination weddings and guests flying in

If the wedding is in a city you do not live in, the classic car is often found through a local club or owner, and everything else needs to be arranged at a distance. That is where one booking desk helps. Guests flying in can be met inside arrivals with a name board, with flight tracking and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. See our airport transfer service guide for how that works, and the wedding limousine service for the wedding-day planning.

For photo locations, local tourism boards are a good start: Destination Toronto and Choose Chicago both list neighbourhoods and landmarks. For flights and hotels, our travel partner is BookingWorldwide.net; Elly8.net books the car only.

A note on drinks and decorations

Laws on alcohol in vehicles differ by city, and Elly8.net chauffeurs follow local rules, so plan any toast for the venue rather than the car. Decorations on premium modern cars are often restricted to avoid marking the paint; ask before the day. Classic car owners have their own rules, and many are stricter.

How to book the modern vehicles

  1. Send the plan. The ceremony and reception addresses, times, photo stops and the number of people per vehicle. Add flight numbers for guests arriving by air.
  2. Choose the vehicles. Sedans, SUVs and the Executive Sprinter are priced on each city page and in packages; the Rolls-Royce, Maybach and stretch vehicles are quoted in the booker.
  3. Reserve. Pay with Reserve now or through the web booker. Confirmation arrives by email.

In Toronto and the GTA rides are operated by the Elly8 fleet; in every other city they are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk.

Frequently asked questions

Does Elly8.net book vintage wedding cars?

No. Elly8.net partner vehicles must be four model years old or newer, and seven years or newer for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley, so classic cars are not part of the fleet. Elly8.net books the modern vehicles around a classic car: the wedding party, parents, guests, airport arrivals and a modern premium car for the couple.

How far should a vintage wedding car drive?

As short a distance as the photographs need. Many couples use the classic car from the getting-ready location to the ceremony and for exit photos, then switch to a modern car with air conditioning for a longer drive to the reception. Keep the route on city streets rather than fast highways.

What is a good backup for a vintage car?

A modern car that the couple would be happy to be photographed in, booked for the same block: a Rolls-Royce or Mercedes-Maybach from the booker, or a First Class Sedan at a published hourly rate. Booked by the hour, it can follow the plan and step in if the classic car fails.

How do we move the wedding party?

An Executive Sprinter carries up to twelve passengers and twelve bags, which keeps the party together and leaves room for dresses and bags. Published hourly rates run from US$190 to US$220 depending on the city, with a three-hour minimum. A Stretch Limousine for up to eight is quoted in the booker.

What is the cancellation policy for the modern vehicles?

Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup. Within 72 hours the charge is 10%, within 48 hours 50%, and within 24 hours or for a no-show 100%. Refunds go back to the original card.
