To get an Uber from the airport, collect your bags first, then open the app, set your terminal as the pickup, and follow the airport's Ride App or Uber/Lyft signs to the designated zone, which is often in a parking garage or a separate lot rather than at the arrivals door. Request when you are on your way to the zone, check the licence plate against the app, and load up.
That routine works almost everywhere, and on a quiet afternoon with one bag it is quick and good value. The details change from airport to airport, and those details are what make the difference at midnight with three suitcases and a child. Below are the rules at six airports, the fares riders actually paid, and an honest view of when the app is the right answer.
How do you get an Uber from the airport?
Wait until you have your bags, open the app, choose your terminal, and follow the Ride App signs to the airport's designated pickup zone. At LAX that is the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1; at SFO, Boston and Las Vegas it is inside a parking garage. Request as you walk, then match the plate before you get in.
Most airports ask you not to request until you are ready. Massport's ride app page for Logan says to request after collecting luggage or clearing customs, and Vancouver's ride app page asks passengers to wait until they have their luggage, because drivers wait in a holding area a short distance from the terminal. The timing matters more than it seems: Uber's own Uber Black page gives Black riders a two-minute grace period at airport pickups before per-minute wait fees start, and says the driver may charge a cancellation fee if you have not boarded within five minutes.
The step-by-step routine
- Clear the baggage hall. Request too early and the driver arrives while you are still at the carousel.
- Find the signs. Airports label app pickups as Ride App, Rideshare or Uber/Lyft. Follow them before you open the app, so you know how far the walk is.
- Set the right pickup. Choose your terminal and, where the app offers it, the exact zone or door number.
- Pick a vehicle that fits the bags. Uber says cargo space is not guaranteed and its guidance assumes checked bags of up to 62 linear inches. For more than two big cases, choose a six-seat option.
- Match the plate and the name. JFK's ride-share page warns about fraudulent drivers and tells travellers to go to the official pickup areas and check the plate against the app.
Where six airports send your Uber
Los Angeles (LAX). Taxis and app rides pick up at LAX-it, a lot next to Terminal 1. Free LAX-it shuttles stop on the arrivals level outside baggage claim at the green bus stop signs, and you can also walk; the route is signed from the terminals. Most apps give you a code so you can request while heading to the lot.
San Francisco (SFO). Domestic pickups are on Level 5 of the Domestic Garage; at the International Terminal they are on the Departures level centre island, zones 12 to 17, according to SFO's ride-app guidance. Uber Black and Black SUV are an exception at the domestic terminals: they pick up on the Arrivals level, at Terminal 1 doors 7 and 8, Terminal 2 doors 4 and 5, and Terminal 3 between United signs 8 and 10.
Boston (BOS). Pickups for Terminals A, C and E are in the Central Parking Garage, and Terminal B's are on Level 2 of the Terminal B garage, according to Massport.
Las Vegas (LAS). Harry Reid International's taxi and ride share page puts app pickups on Level 2 of the Terminal 1 parking garage and on the Valet Level of the Terminal 3 garage. Taxis wait outside baggage claim.
Vancouver (YVR). Lyft and Uber are the authorised ride apps. There are three pickup areas: International Arrivals Level 2, Domestic Arrivals Level 2 and the South Terminal, with Ride App signs to follow.
Calgary (YYC). Uber and Lyft are the only authorised operators, and the airport's ride app page puts pickups on the Arrivals level by Doors 3, 12 or 15, or on Departures at Doors 5 and 11 at peak times. The airport lists a pickup fee of C$5.10 plus GST at the terminal.
Real fare examples
Uber publishes average prices on its airport pages, based on the past month of trips from a named neighbourhood to the airport. They are trips to the airport rather than from it, and Uber says they are not fixed or guaranteed, but they are the most reliable public numbers for what riders really pay. We set them next to the airport's taxi benchmark and our own fixed fare, which is the same in either direction.
| Airport | Uber average (route) | Taxi benchmark | Elly8.net fixed fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| LAX | UberX US$21, Black US$43 (Westchester, next to the airport) | metered | LAX to Beverly Hills US$170 Business Sedan |
| SFO | UberX US$50, Black US$94 (Pacific Heights) | about US$52 on distance plus US$6 pickup fee | SFO to Union Square US$180 |
| BOS | UberX US$33, Black US$60 (South End) | metered; Silver Line SL1 free from Logan | Logan to Back Bay US$130 |
| LAS | UberX US$27, Premier SUV US$47 (Off-Strip) | US$22.25 to US$30.25 Strip zones plus fees | LAS to the Strip US$125 |
| YVR | UberX C$34, Comfort C$46 (Vancouver) | C$46 downtown zone fare | YVR to downtown US$110 |
| YYC | UberX C$39, Premier C$85 (Calgary) | about C$40 to C$45 on the meter | YYC to downtown US$105 |
The sources for the taxi column are the SFMTA fare schedule, the MBTA's Logan Airport page, the Nevada Taxicab Authority, YVR's taxi zone fares, which include the C$4 passenger load charge, and YYC's taxis and sedans page. Uber's averages are on its airport pages for SFO, Boston and the others.
Read the table honestly and it says this: on an average day, an UberX costs a fraction of a pre-booked car, and in Boston the bus into town is free. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, the app or the transit link is the sensible choice, and we would say so on the phone.
What the averages do not show
An average flattens the moments that cost the most. Arrivals bunch up: three wide-bodies landing within half an hour fill the garage zone and push the app price up for everyone leaving at once. A late flight lands after transit has slowed down. A storm or a big convention changes the whole day. Uber's upfront price includes the airport's charges and moves with demand, which is exactly what you want to know before you accept it.
There are also costs that are not money. The walk to a garage level with a trolley, the search for the right door number, a two-minute grace period while a child's car seat is still in the bag. None of these are dramatic. All of them land at the end of a long flight. Our post on the Uber airport surcharge lists the published airport fees app riders and taxi passengers pay.
Wheelchairs and reduced mobility
Airports make some exceptions to the zone rules for accessible rides. JFK's ride-share page says Uber and Lyft offer accessible vehicle options, including wheelchair ramps and extra space, for pickup in front of the terminal. SFO says guests requesting a wheelchair accessible vehicle may be picked up at the domestic terminal kerb, with ADA ramps at Terminals 2 and 3, and that Level 5 of the garage is accessible too. LAX's free LAX-it shuttles are ADA accessible, and the airport says a wheelchair can meet a passenger at the LAX-it lot. Uber lists Uber WAV among its ride options. If you or a relative need help from the gate, tell the airline as well as the driver. With a pre-booked car, tell the desk when you book, so the chauffeur and vehicle are planned around it.
When the app is the right answer
- One or two travellers, carry-on or one bag each, in daylight.
- Airports with a short, well-signed walk to the zone, and a quiet arrival time.
- Trips where transit or a taxi flat fare is not a better option. Check them first: Logan's Silver Line from the airport is free, and in Las Vegas a taxi zone fare to the Strip is hard to beat for two.
- Flexible plans where you can watch the price and wait if it is high.
When a chauffeur inside arrivals is easier
- Late, delayed or international arrivals. We track the flight, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. Immigration queues do not start a meter.
- Families. Child seats are fitted before you land, on request when you book.
- Groups and luggage. A Business SUV takes up to six passengers and six bags; an Executive Sprinter up to twelve and twelve, priced once per vehicle, not per person.
- No walk to the garage. The chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board and walks you to the car. See airport meet and greet.
- Business arrivals. A fixed price on a corporate account, a vehicle class confirmed in advance, an invoice at the end of the month.
Elly8.net airport fares in the cities above start at US$105 at Calgary and US$110 at Vancouver, and US$125 to US$180 at Las Vegas, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco, in a Business Sedan. Full lists are on our Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco and Vancouver pages, and the airport transfers page explains the service.
Going the other way: an Uber to the airport
Departures are simpler. LAX says on its LAX-it page that taxis and app rides still take passengers directly to the terminals when they are flying out; only pickups go to the lot. Vancouver asks app drivers to drop off within the permitted unloading areas on the Level 3 kerb, like any other car, and Uber's own airport pages say the driver will normally take you to the departures area for the terminal or airline you enter.
The risk on departures is timing rather than walking. A 5 a.m. request in a quiet suburb may take longer to find a driver than you expected, and a big-event morning may cost more. For an early flight, either request with a generous margin or book ahead. Our fares to the airport are the same fixed price as from it, so a 4:30 a.m. pickup in a First Class Sedan costs exactly what it costs at noon. If your party is large, remember that the vehicle you need for departure is set by the bags, not the people.
If you do book an app ride ahead
Uber Reserve lets you book up to 90 days in advance in select cities and enter your flight number. It locks the upfront price, adds a reservation fee, and Uber says the ride is confirmed once you receive driver details. Read our guide to Uber Black reservations before relying on it for a late arrival, and our comparison of Uber, Lyft and taxis for everyday trips in town.
Rides in Toronto and the GTA are operated by the Elly8 fleet; in every other city they are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network, with Elly8.net taking the booking, fixing the price and running the 24/7 desk.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Uber pick you up at the arrivals door?
Usually not. Most large airports send app rides to designated zones: LAX uses the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1, SFO's domestic pickups are on Level 5 of the garage, and Logan's are in the Central Parking Garage and the Terminal B garage. At SFO, Uber Black and Black SUV are an exception and pick up on the Arrivals level.
Should you request the Uber before you get your bags?
No. Massport and YVR both ask riders to collect luggage before requesting. Uber Black gives a two-minute grace period at airport pickups before wait fees start, and a cancellation fee may apply after five minutes. Request on the way to the pickup zone, once you know you are a few minutes away.
How much is an Uber from the airport?
It depends on the city, the tier and the moment. Uber's own past-month averages to the airport included UberX at US$50 from Pacific Heights to SFO and US$33 from the South End to Logan, and Uber Black at US$94 and US$60 on the same routes. Prices from the airport are set by demand when you request.
Is there an extra airport fee on Uber rides?
Some airports charge app rides a pickup fee that is built into the quote. Calgary's airport, for example, lists a ride app pickup fee of C$5.10 plus GST at the terminal. Our post on the Uber airport surcharge lists the published fees at several airports, alongside taxi airport fees.
What if the Uber will not fit your luggage?
Uber says cargo space is not guaranteed and recommends contacting the driver after requesting, then cancelling for a larger ride if needed. With a pre-booked car you choose the vehicle by bags in advance: Elly8.net sedans carry two bags, SUVs six and the Executive Sprinter twelve.
What does an Elly8.net airport pickup include?
Flight tracking, a chauffeur waiting inside arrivals with a name board, complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. The fare is fixed per vehicle and the same in either direction, and cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup.
