Zurich to St. Moritz takes about three hours whichever way you go. By train, a timetable check for a weekday in December 2026 shows departures from Zürich HB that reach St. Moritz in 3 hours 5 minutes with one change at Landquart, or 3 hours 17 minutes with one change at Chur over the Albula line. From the airport station, add a short hop into the city and a second change, for about 3 hours 23 to 3 hours 40 minutes. By road, Zurich Airport to St. Moritz Dorf is about 217 km (135 mi) and roughly three hours on a clear road.
So the choice is not about speed. It is about luggage, the time you land, who is travelling with you, and whether the journey itself is part of the holiday. For a couple with a suitcase each, the train is excellent value and a spectacular ride, and we would book it ourselves. For a family with skis landing after an overnight flight, a private car from US$745 per vehicle, fixed in US dollars, removes three changes of transport and an Alpine pass from a very long day.
Is the train or a private car better from Zurich to St. Moritz?
The train is better for solo travellers and couples with light luggage: about 3 hours from Zürich HB with one change, scenic, and priced per seat. A private car is better for families, groups and skiers with equipment, late or delayed arrivals and anyone who wants door-to-door service, at a fixed US$745 to US$1,940 per vehicle from Zurich Airport.
The St. Moritz tourist office puts both options at about three hours: the train journey from Zurich's main station to St. Moritz, and the drive from Zurich. It also describes the rail routes into the Engadin, from Chur over the Albula Pass, from Tirano in Italy over the Bernina Pass, or from Landquart via Klosters, and notes that a chauffeur can meet you in the arrivals hall and drive you straight to your accommodation. Both are well-trodden ways up the mountain.

The train in detail
Two routes from Zürich HB. On the sample weekday we checked, trains leave Zürich HB at :07 past the hour for Landquart, connecting into a Rhaetian Railway train that runs through the Vereina tunnel into the Engadin and reaches St. Moritz in 3 hours 5 minutes. Trains at :38 run to Chur, where the connection climbs the Albula line to St. Moritz in 3 hours 17 minutes. Both involve one change, with a short connection on the same station. Check the exact times for your date on SBB, because timetables change in December and for engineering works.
The Albula line is the scenic one. The Rhaetian Railway's Albula and Bernina lines have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2008, according to the Rhaetian Railway, with spiral tunnels and the famous Landwasser Viaduct. If the journey matters, take the Chur connection on the way up, in daylight.
From the airport. From Zürich Flughafen station, the sample connections we checked took 3 hours 23 to 3 hours 40 minutes to St. Moritz, with changes at Zürich HB and at Landquart or Chur. After an overnight flight from North America, that is three trains, two changes and a lot of luggage handling before lunch.
Luggage. Regional and long-distance trains have racks, but space is limited, and ski bags on a crowded winter Saturday are awkward. Engadin Tourism's how-to-get-here page points travellers to the SBB luggage service, which sends bags and sports equipment ahead so you travel light. It also highlights a "Public Transport Included" offer: guests staying more than one night in a participating hotel or holiday apartment travel free on public transport within the Upper Engadin during their stay. If both apply to you, the train becomes even more attractive.
The private car in detail
Door to door. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, waits in Zurich's arrivals hall with a name board, loads the bags and skis, and drives you to the hotel door in St. Moritz. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a slow passport line or a long wait at the oversize baggage belt. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
The fixed fare. From Zurich Airport to St. Moritz Dorf, the fare is US$745 in a business sedan, US$970 in a business SUV, US$1,195 in a First Class SUV, US$1,305 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,940 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet. Tolls, parking and any car-train ticket, where they arise, are billed at cost. The same fare applies in either direction, and a round trip costs from US$1,420 in a business sedan to US$3,690 in a Sprinter. From a hotel in central Zurich rather than the airport, use the web booker for an instant fixed quote.
The route. In winter, the chauffeur normally takes the motorway to Chur and then the Julier Pass, which Engadin Tourism lists as open all year, or loads the car onto the Vereina car train through the tunnel if conditions favour it. Our Zurich to St. Moritz by private car guide covers the road, the stops and the winter timing in detail.

What the decision looks like for North American travellers
You land at 7 a.m. after an overnight flight. This is the most common case, and the one where a car helps most. You have slept badly, you have two suitcases each, and your hotel room may not be ready until the afternoon. The train is perfectly possible, but the car lets you sleep for most of three hours and arrive at the hotel door. If the flight is late, the chauffeur is still there; if you miss a connection, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup.
You spent two nights in Zurich first. Rested and with luggage under control, the train from Zürich HB is an easy, beautiful day. Take the Albula route in daylight. A taxi or tram to the station and a short transfer at St. Moritz station are the only other legs. See Zurich chauffeur and airport transfers for the city part of the trip.
You are a family of four or five with ski bags. Count the pieces: suitcases, ski bags, boot bags, a stroller. A Business SUV seats up to six with room for six bags; an Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with room for twelve. Child seats are fitted on request. As arithmetic for comparison only, the US$970 SUV fare split across five travellers is US$194 each, though the fare is charged per vehicle, not per person. Five rail tickets, two changes and the luggage service add up in a different way, and the car is door to door.
You are a group of friends. An Executive Sprinter from US$1,940 carries up to twelve people and their equipment in one vehicle. See Sprinter van with driver and group transportation.
You are flying privately or connecting by air. Engadin Airport in Samedan, about 8 km (5 mi) and 12 minutes from St. Moritz Dorf, serves private jets, charters and air taxis, and the transfer into town costs from US$125 in a business sedan. See private jet and FBO transfers.
What about a rental car?
A rental car is the third option, and for some travellers it is the right one. If you are a confident winter driver, want the freedom to explore the Engadin valleys for a week, and are comfortable with Alpine roads in snow, a car collected at Zurich Airport gives you that. Engadin Tourism notes that the Julier, Maloja and Ofen passes stay open all year while the Albula and Flüela passes close in winter, so the winter route is settled before you leave.
The trade-offs are the ones North American drivers rarely meet at home: a mountain pass after an overnight flight, snow chains in the boot, a possible queue at the Vereina car train on busy weekends, and hotel parking in a small resort. For a week of skiing, many guests find that the car mostly sits in a garage while they use lifts and local buses. A chauffeur up and down, with an hourly booking for a dinner in another village, often costs less in effort if not always in money. Our chauffeur vs car rental guide weighs it up.
The best of both: one way by train, one way by car
Many guests ride the train up for the scenery and take the car down to Zurich Airport on departure day, when an early long-haul flight makes a 3-hour train trip with two changes less appealing. On the sample weekday we checked, a train leaving St. Moritz at 06:45 reached Zürich Flughafen at 10:11, with two changes, which makes a morning flight home difficult by rail. A car can leave whenever your flight requires, with a margin for snow and for the check-in time your airline recommends. Our St. Moritz train guide explains how station pickups work if you arrive by rail.

Winter considerations
The train runs in snow that slows the roads, which is a real advantage on a stormy day. The car has the advantage of time: you leave when you choose, and on a Saturday in high season, you avoid the busiest trains. Event weekends in St. Moritz, such as the Snow Polo World Cup in January and White Turf on the frozen lake in February, fill both trains and roads, so book early either way. The St. Moritz chauffeur page lists the 2026 to 2027 event dates we are booking around.

Is there a direct train from Zurich Airport to St. Moritz?
Not on the connections we checked. Each needed a change at Zürich HB and another at Landquart or Chur. A private car from Zurich Airport is door to door, about three hours on a clear road, from US$745 per vehicle.
How much is a private transfer from Zurich to St. Moritz?
From Zurich Airport to St. Moritz Dorf, US$745 in a business sedan, US$970 in a business SUV, US$1,195 in a First Class SUV, US$1,305 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,940 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle. The fare is fixed and includes chauffeur, taxes, standard gratuity and meet and greet.
Can luggage be sent ahead if we take the train?
Engadin Tourism recommends the SBB luggage service, which transports luggage and sports equipment ahead so you can travel light. Check the service's conditions and delivery times with SBB before you rely on it for an arrival-day itinerary, especially for skis.
Which is better with ski equipment?
Usually the car. Ski and boot bags are bulky on trains with limited rack space and changes. A Business SUV seats up to six with six bags, and an Executive Sprinter up to twelve with twelve bags. Tell us how many ski bags you have when you book.
What if my flight to Zurich is delayed?
The chauffeur tracks the landing from your flight number, and waiting after a tracked landing is complimentary. If you miss a connection, message the 24/7 desk with the new flight and the pickup moves. With the train, you simply take a later connection.
