Zurich Airport to St. Moritz is about 217 km (135 mi) by road, roughly three hours on a clear road. The usual route follows the motorway east and south to Chur, then climbs through Lenzerheide and over the Julier Pass, which stays open all year, before dropping into the Upper Engadin at Silvaplana, a few minutes from St. Moritz. In winter, the alternative is to drive onto the Vereina car train at Klosters and ride 18 minutes through the mountain into the Lower Engadin.
With Elly8.net, the drive is a fixed fare agreed before you fly: from US$745 in a business sedan to US$1,940 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, in US dollars, with the chauffeur meeting you in the arrivals hall. Below are the route stage by stage, realistic timings by season, stops worth making, and the costs, including what is billed at cost.
How long does it take to drive from Zurich to St. Moritz?
About three hours on a clear road for the 217 km (135 mi) from Zurich Airport to St. Moritz Dorf; from central Zurich, our routed estimate is about 205 km (128 mi) and 2 hours 50 minutes via the Julier Pass. Snow, Saturday traffic and car-train queues in winter can add an hour or more.
The St. Moritz tourist office gives the same picture: around three hours by car from Zurich, and about four from Munich. In summer, on a weekday, the drive is often close to the clear-road time. On a Saturday in February, with snow falling on the pass and every chalet in the valley changing guests, it can take much longer. The fixed fare does not change with the conditions.

All distances and times in this table are our routed estimates for a clear road, except where noted.
Zurich to Chur. The first half of the drive is motorway. Leaving the airport or the city, the road runs south-east, along the shore of the Walensee with steep mountains rising on the far side, then up the Rhine valley to Chur. This is the fast part of the journey, and where the time is made up if the morning traffic around Zurich is light.
Chur to the Julier. At Chur, the road leaves the motorway and climbs to the resort of Lenzerheide, then continues south through the valley towns towards Bivio and the Julier Pass. Engadin Tourism's how-to-get-here page lists the Julier, Maloja and Ofen passes as open all year round, while the Albula and Flüela passes close in winter. That is why the Julier is the standard winter road from the north.
Into the Engadin. Over the pass, the road descends to Silvaplana and its lake, then runs along the Upper Engadin lakes to St. Moritz. The fares on the price list are calculated to St. Moritz Dorf, the hillside centre with the grand hotels. Hotels in St. Moritz Bad, Champfèr, Celerina, Pontresina, Samedan and Sils are a short drive away and quoted in the web booker.
The Vereina car train: the winter alternative
The Rhaetian Railway's Vereina car transporter carries cars through the 19 km Vereina Tunnel between Klosters Selfranga and Sagliains in the Lower Engadin in 18 minutes. Its winter timetable runs from 1 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, with departures every 30 minutes for most of the day, and the railway publishes expected congestion times for the busy winter weekends.
From Zurich, the approach runs to Landquart and up the Prättigau valley to Klosters Selfranga, about 147 km (91 mi) from central Zurich by our routed estimate. After the tunnel, Sagliains to St. Moritz is about 44 km (27 mi) and 45 minutes up the valley. The chauffeur decides on the day between the Julier and the tunnel, based on snow on the pass and the queues at the loading station. The fixed fare does not change, and the car-train ticket, when used, is billed at cost.
Stops worth making
A short comfort stop is normal on a three-hour drive. If you want a longer stop, such as lunch in Chur or a walk at the top of the pass, tell the desk when you book so it is planned into the timing and the fixed quote.
The Walensee. The motorway follows the lake's south shore, with steep mountains across the water. A stop at a lakeside village breaks the first hour pleasantly.
Chur. The Rhaetian Railway describes Chur as the oldest town in Switzerland. Its compact old town, around the cathedral, makes a good lunch stop roughly halfway.
Lenzerheide. A resort town about 22 minutes above Chur by our routed estimate. In summer, it is a pleasant coffee stop with a view; in winter, it is busy with its own skiers.
The Julier summit. In clear weather, the pass is the moment the landscape changes from green valleys to the high, open Engadin. In snow or poor visibility, the chauffeur keeps going.
Silvaplana and the lakes. The first lake after the descent, ten minutes from St. Moritz, and a good place to stretch your legs before the hotel.
Starting at Zurich Airport
Most North American travellers begin this drive straight off an overnight flight, so the first half hour matters. Give us the flight number when you book. The chauffeur tracks the landing, waits in the arrivals hall at Zurich Airport with a name board, and takes over the luggage trolley, skis included. Complimentary waiting after a tracked landing covers a long passport line or a slow oversize baggage belt, and if a connection through a European hub is missed, the 24/7 desk moves the pickup to the new flight. Within minutes you are on the motorway, and most guests sleep through the first hour to Chur. See airport transfers and meet and greet.
The return drive to Zurich
Going home, the same road runs in reverse, but the timing is less forgiving because it ends at a check-in desk. A morning long-haul departure from Zurich can mean a pickup in St. Moritz well before dawn, when the Julier may have frozen overnight. The desk works back from the flight: about three hours on a clear road, extra margin when snow is forecast or on a Saturday, and the check-in time your airline recommends. If the forecast is poor, it may suggest leaving the evening before and staying near the airport; that is a judgement made with you, not a surcharge. Booking the round trip with the arrival means the departure car is assigned before the valley's busiest weekends.
Seasons and timing
Winter (December to April). The busiest time for St. Moritz transfers. Saturdays are changeover days, the event weekends fill the valley, and snow can slow the Julier. Sunday and midweek arrivals are calmer. The desk builds extra margin into the departure to Zurich Airport when snow is forecast, working back from your flight time and the check-in time your airline recommends for a long-haul flight with ski bags.
Summer (June to September). The roads are clear, the passes north of the Engadin that close in winter are open, and the drive is often close to the clear-road time. Summer is when a scenic detour makes sense; ask the desk if you want one, and it is quoted in the web booker.
Event weekends. The St. Moritz winter calendar includes the Snow Polo World Cup and the bobsleigh World Cup in January and White Turf horse racing on the frozen lake on Sundays in February. The St. Moritz chauffeur page lists the 2026 to 2027 dates. Book the airport transfer as soon as your hotel is confirmed, and add an hourly chauffeur for the event days.

Which vehicle for the mountain drive?
A Business Sedan or First Class Sedan suits a couple with a suitcase each; with skis, a sedan fills up quickly. A Business SUV or First Class SUV seats up to six with six bags and is the usual choice for a family with ski equipment. An Executive Sprinter seats up to twelve with twelve bags, for a group or two families travelling together. Tell us the number of ski and boot bags when you book, and ask for child or booster seats with the children's ages. See Sprinter van with driver.
As arithmetic for comparison only, the US$1,940 Sprinter fare shared by eight skiers is US$242.50 each, but the price is per vehicle and charged as one booking.
Is the drive better than the train?
For one or two people with light bags, the train is excellent and about the same three hours from Zürich HB; our Zurich to St. Moritz train or private car guide compares them in detail, and the St. Moritz train guide covers the scenic lines. The car wins for families and groups, for skiers with equipment, for travellers arriving tired from an overnight flight, and for departures timed to an early flight. For a broader view of driving yourself, see chauffeur vs car rental.
Planning a longer trip? The same desk books the Zurich chauffeur and airport transfers, Lake Como car service and the Milan chauffeur; our Milan to St. Moritz guide covers the road from Italy. For long drives between cities, see city to city car service.
