NYC to Atlantic City is about 129 mi (207 km) from Midtown Manhattan to the Boardwalk casinos, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes on a clear road through the Lincoln Tunnel, down the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway to the Atlantic City Expressway. On a Friday afternoon, allow three and a half hours or more. With Elly8.net, the ride is quoted in the web booker at one fixed, all-in price for the vehicle before you travel.
For one person, NJ Transit's express bus 319 from the Port Authority Bus Terminal is the budget choice, at a published US$49.75 excursion round trip. For a couple with luggage, a family, a group of friends or colleagues heading to the Convention Center, a chauffeured car is door to door, leaves when you want and does not stop for anyone else. This guide covers the route, the timing, the stops and the honest comparison.
How long is the drive from NYC to Atlantic City?
About 2 hours 45 minutes on a clear road for the 129 mi (207 km) from Midtown to the Boardwalk, via the Lincoln Tunnel, New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway. Friday afternoons, summer weekends and holiday Sundays add an hour or more, mostly at the tunnel and on the Parkway.
The clear-road figure is a routing estimate. In practice, the Manhattan end and the summer Parkway decide the day. Leaving Midtown before about 1 p.m. on a Friday, or after 8 p.m., avoids the worst of the outbound queue.

Where the ride starts: Manhattan, JFK or Newark
| Start | Distance to the Boardwalk | Clear-road time | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midtown Manhattan | 129 mi (207 km) | about 2 h 45 min | Web booker, fixed per vehicle |
| Newark Liberty (EWR) | 116 mi (187 km) | about 2 h 25 min | Web booker, fixed per vehicle |
| JFK | 140 mi (225 km) | about 3 h 5 min | Web booker, fixed per vehicle |
| Atlantic City International (ACY), if you fly in | 17 mi (27 km) | about 42 min | US$175 to US$455, fixed |
From Manhattan. The usual pickup is a home, office or hotel. The car heads through the Lincoln Tunnel, picks up the Turnpike's Eastern Spur and leaves it at Exit 11 for the Garden State Parkway south.
From Newark. If you are flying into Newark on the way to Atlantic City, EWR is the shortest of the New York airports by road, about 116 mi (187 km). The chauffeur meets you inside arrivals with a name board and the flight is tracked, the same as any Elly8.net airport transfer.
From JFK. The longest start, because the car has to cross the city or Staten Island first. If your flight lands at JFK at rush hour, consider a night in Manhattan and a morning departure.
From the New York suburbs. Westchester, Long Island and Connecticut pickups are priced the same way in the web booker. See Westchester and Greenwich and the Hamptons for local services.
The route and the tolls
The Garden State Parkway, run by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, runs the length of the state between Cape May and the New York line at Montvale, as the Turnpike Authority describes it. The car joins it from the Turnpike and follows it south to the Atlantic City Expressway, which carries you the last few miles into the city.
The trip uses tolled crossings and highways: a Hudson River crossing, the Turnpike, the Parkway and the Expressway. Elly8.net bills tolls at cost on the final invoice rather than folding a guess into the fare, so you pay what the road actually charged.
Boardwalk or Marina. The Marina District casinos are close to the end of the Expressway; the Boardwalk properties are a few minutes further. Name the hotel when you book.
Bus, train or private car

| Train via Philadelphia | Two tickets plus the free casino shuttle | Train to Philadelphia, then the Atlantic City Rail Line | Rail fans, flexible days |
| Driving yourself | Fuel, tolls, casino parking | About 2 h 45 min clear road | People who need their own car |
| Elly8.net Business Sedan | Web booker, fixed per vehicle | Your door to the hotel entrance | Couples, executives |

The bus. According to NJ Transit's Atlantic City page, route 319 runs express from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to Atlantic City, with limited stops at Newark Penn Station and Journal Square in Jersey City. The excursion round trip is US$49.75, valid for 10 days and bought in advance through the NJ Transit app or at Port Authority; drivers cannot sell round-trip tickets on board. Extra summer trips run from late June.
The train. There is no direct train from New York. NJ Transit notes that Amtrak passengers can connect to the Atlantic City Rail Line at Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, which makes it two trains and a shuttle. It works for a relaxed day; it is not quicker.
The car. The car makes sense when several things are true at once: more than one person, real luggage, a specific arrival time, a late return, or work to do on the way. For four colleagues, one Business SUV is a single booking, a single invoice and a three-hour meeting room.
Our verdict. Solo with a backpack and flexible times: take the 319. Two or more with bags, a group celebration, a business trip with a schedule, or a return after the last bus: book the car. Our Atlantic City taxi and rideshare comparison covers getting around once you are there.
Stops and pickups on the way
The drive is long enough that a stop helps, especially with children. Tell the desk when you book so the time is planned in.
- A Parkway service area. The Turnpike Authority lists service areas along both roads; a 15-minute coffee stop is the most common request.
- Collecting friends in New Jersey. Hoboken, Jersey City and Newark are on the way out of the city, so a second pickup adds little time.
- Newark airport. A friend flying in can be collected at EWR on the way, with the flight tracked.
- The shore towns. If part of the group is staying in Ventnor, Margate or Longport, add a drop-off before the casino.
For a fuller day out on the Philadelphia side, our Philadelphia to Atlantic City guide lists stops such as Egg Harbor City and the Absecon Lighthouse.
Day trip or overnight
A day trip from Manhattan is possible, but it is a long day: five and a half hours of driving on a clear road, more with traffic. Most travellers do better with one night.
Overnight. Book a one-way down on Saturday morning and a one-way back on Sunday, timed to avoid the afternoon return traffic. In between, the US$3 AC Jitney and short walks cover most of the city.
Day trip with the car waiting. For a meeting at the Convention Center, a site visit or a show, the car can wait and bring you back the same night. For reference, Elly8.net's New York City car service lists a full-day chauffeur from US$775 in a Business Sedan and hourly service from US$105 an hour (3-hour minimum); the desk will compare that with a round-trip quote for your exact times.
The big night only. If you arrive by bus and only want a car for the evening, Atlantic City's own evening out and event night package starts at US$475 in a Business Sedan and US$950 in an Executive Sprinter, covering dinner, the show, the wait and the ride back to your hotel.
Timing the drive around a show or event
Many New Yorkers head down for one fixed moment: a concert, a fight, a comedy show or a convention opening. Work backwards from it. A 9 p.m. show at a casino theatre means doors around 8 p.m., so a car leaving Midtown at 4 p.m. on a Saturday has a sensible cushion; the same departure on a Friday in July does not.
Visit Atlantic City, the official tourism site, lists the calendar, including annual events such as Taste Atlantic City, the Soar & Shore Airshow and the ShopRite LPGA, and concerts and comedy at the casino venues. Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall lists Disney On Ice presents Spotlight Magic from November 6 to 8, 2026, and Goosemas Night 1 on December 11, 2026.
On big nights, the last few miles are the slow part, because everyone arrives at once. Tell the desk the show time when you book; the chauffeur can drop you at the venue first and take the bags to the hotel afterwards, or the other way round if check-in matters more. If you want to leave straight after the encore and be back in Manhattan by 2 a.m., book the return with waiting, and agree a pickup corner a block or two from the venue doors.
