Kentucky Derby transportation comes down to two questions: where your vehicle is allowed to stop, and how you leave after the race. On Oaks and Derby days, Churchill Downs runs a special plan. In 2026, onsite parking was pre-purchased only and vehicle-specific, cars and buses could buy a drop-off pass for Kentucky Derby Drive that allowed drop-offs but no pickups, and taxis and rideshare had no onsite service at all, using a lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium instead. The 153rd Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 1, 2027, with the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, April 30.
This guide from the Elly8.net desk lays out the drop-off options as the track published them, a timeline for the day built around the 2027 post time, and an exit strategy for the moment everyone leaves together. A full Derby Day with an Elly8.net chauffeur runs from US$700 in a Business Sedan to US$1,400 in a 12-seat Executive Sprinter on the 8-hour package, fixed and all-in.
Where can cars drop off at the Kentucky Derby?
In 2026, Churchill Downs allowed three routes for vehicles on Oaks and Derby days: parking in a reserved lot with a vehicle-specific pass, a pre-purchased drop-off on Kentucky Derby Drive using Warren Avenue between Queen and Thornberry, with no pickups, or taxi and rideshare via the Bronze Lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Those details come from the track's Travel and Parking page, which carried the 2026 plan at the time of writing. The 2027 plan is published closer to Derby Week, and the desk checks it before your date. Rules can change from year to year, so treat what follows as the pattern to plan around, not a promise.

The drop-off options, one by one
1. A reserved lot with a parking pass
All onsite parking on Oaks and Derby days was reserved in advance and sold out in 2026. Some premium tickets include parking, and the track named The Mansion, Spires Terrace, Woodford Reserve Paddock Club, suites, Matt Winn's and select dining rooms among them. Three rules matter for a chauffeured booking:
- Passes are vehicle-specific. They are issued for a car, a limo, a mini-bus or a motor coach, and the track said wrong vehicle types would be turned away. Book a vehicle that matches your pass.
- Physical passes for larger vehicles. Passes for cars were digital, through Ticketmaster or the Churchill Downs app, but bus, Sprinter van and limo passes were mailed to the purchaser. Hand the pass to the chauffeur before the day.
- No re-entry, no shuttling within lots. Once the vehicle leaves the lot, it cannot come back in.
With a pass, the chauffeur follows the lot's own entry route, parks and waits. This is the most comfortable way to do the day, because the car is a walk from the gate at the end.
2. The Kentucky Derby Drive drop-off pass
For guests without parking, cars and buses could pre-purchase a drop-off pass, using Warren Avenue between Queen and Thornberry. It was drop-off only: no pickups, and the pass was collected at drop-off. The track also said there was no drop-off at the Infield Gate.
A drop-off pass gets you to the gate in the morning, but it does not solve the evening. The desk agrees a separate pickup point outside the closures in advance and sends it to you, with a time. Expect a walk to it.
3. Taxi and rideshare via the stadium lot
On Oaks and Derby days in 2026 there was no onsite taxi or rideshare drop-off or pickup. Riders used the Bronze Lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium and walked to Churchill Downs. Paid parking was also available at L&N Stadium from the Thursday, paid on the day by cash or card: US$40 for a car, US$150 for an RV and US$200 for a bus, with no advance sales. The track noted there was no mobility assistance between the lot and the track.
4. The free shuttle from the Kentucky Exposition Center
Guests with frontside reserved tickets but no onsite parking could park at the Kentucky Exposition Center, entering through Gates 1, 2 or 6, and ride a free shuttle to and from the Black Lot outside the Paddock Gate. Infield tickets were not accepted on the shuttle. ADA-accessible shuttles ran, but the track said it could not provide wheelchair assistance once a guest was dropped off.
| Route (2026 plan) | Drop-off | Pickup after the races | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reserved lot, vehicle-specific pass | inside your assigned lot | the car is parked and waiting | premium tickets, groups, mobility needs |
| Derby Drive drop-off pass | Warren Ave between Queen and Thornberry | not allowed there; agree a point outside the closures | guests without parking who want a door drop |
| Taxi or rideshare | Bronze Lot, L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium | same lot, after a walk | solo guests comfortable walking |
| Free KEC shuttle | Black Lot outside the Paddock Gate | same, back to KEC | frontside ticket holders who drive |
Timing the day around the 2027 Derby
The official Kentucky Derby site says gates open at 9 a.m. on Derby Day 2027 and post time for the Derby is scheduled for approximately 6:57 p.m. ET. In 2026, lots for pass holders opened at 8:00 a.m. on Oaks and Derby days. Those three times shape everything else.
| Time | What happens | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Chauffeur collects you from your hotel or house | Leave time for closures; Central Avenue was closed for the 2026 race weekend |
| 8:00 a.m. (2026 lot opening) | Reserved lots open for pass holders | Earlier arrival means an easier lot entry |
| 9:00 a.m. | Gates open on Derby Day 2027 | The undercard runs through the day |
| Midday to late afternoon | Racing, dining, the paddock | The chauffeur stays within reach; message the desk to change plans |
| About 6:57 p.m. | The 153rd Kentucky Derby | The single busiest moment of the day |
| After the Derby | The exit | Leave early, leave late, or walk to the staged car |
Oaks Day on the Friday follows a similar pattern and is a full race day in its own right. Book each day separately, each with its own confirmation and chauffeur details.
Getting out after the crowd: three strategies
The official site says the Derby typically runs in the early evening, and when it is over most of the crowd moves at the same time. App prices rise, the stadium lot fills with people looking for their rides, and neighbourhood streets slow to a crawl. Choose one of these in advance.
Leave before the Derby. Some guests, particularly families and older relatives, leave after the late-afternoon races and watch the Derby itself on television over dinner. Leaving before the main exit means the car moves freely.
Stay late. Waiting in your seats or dining area until the crowd thins, then walking to the car or the agreed pickup point, is calmer than joining the rush. Tell the desk your plan, and book the hours to cover it.
Walk to a staged car. With a lot pass, the car is already parked; with a drop-off pass, the chauffeur is waiting at the agreed point outside the closures at the agreed time. The walk is the only queue.
A staged car with a fixed price beats rideshare at that hour for most groups. There is no surge, no searching for one car among thousands, and nobody in Derby shoes walks to a stadium lot in the dark.
Which vehicle, and what it costs
| Party | Vehicle | Pass type to match | 8-hour Derby Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Business Sedan or First Class Sedan | car | US$700 or US$1,145 |
| 4 to 6 | Business SUV or First Class SUV | car | US$885 or US$1,070 |
| 7 to 12 | Executive Sprinter | Sprinter van or mini-bus, as the track issues it | US$1,400 |
Prices are per vehicle and all-in, with the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity included. Parking passes, drop-off passes, tolls, parking and time beyond the booked hours are billed at cost. Derby Days are long, and the 8-hour package will not always cover a 9 a.m. arrival through a late exit; the desk prices the extra hours by the hour, from US$95 in a Business Sedan to US$190 in an Executive Sprinter. For guests with a drop-off pass only, two separate timed transfers, morning and evening, are often cheaper than a full day; quote them in the web booker.
For groups, one Sprinter with one pass is simpler than several cars. Twelve guests on the US$1,400 day works out at about US$117 each, as arithmetic for comparison only. See Sprinter van with driver and group transportation.
Around race day: airport, Derby Eve and the day after
Airport legs. Arrivals bunch up on the Thursday and Friday and departures on the Sunday. SDF to downtown is fixed from US$125 to US$325, the same in either direction; our Louisville airport car service guide covers the yellow-curb pickup.
Derby Eve and Derby Week evenings. Parties and dinners fill the week; the 5-hour evening out package runs from US$475 to US$950. The chauffeur follows local rules on alcohol in vehicles.
The day after. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail day, 8 hours from US$700 to US$1,400, is a natural Sunday. Our Louisville chauffeur service guide has the details, and the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs is a good stop on a quieter day of the week.
If you are weighing an app ride for race day, our Louisville taxi or rideshare guide sets out when that works.
Corporate hosts and agents
Companies hosting clients usually book the whole weekend at once: airport transfers, a Sprinter on race days and sedans for executives. A corporate account puts everything on one monthly invoice with one contact at the 24/7 desk, and NDAs are available on request. Travel agents packaging Derby trips can book through a travel agent account. See also sports event transportation and the events hub.
Rides in Louisville are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk.

Frequently asked questions
When is the 2027 Kentucky Derby?
The 153rd Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs, with the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, April 30. The official site says gates open at 9 a.m. on Derby Day and post time is scheduled for approximately 6:57 p.m. ET, so plan for a long day and an evening exit.
Can a chauffeur drop us at the gate?
Only within the track's rules. In 2026, cars and buses needed a pre-purchased drop-off pass for Kentucky Derby Drive, using Warren Avenue between Queen and Thornberry, and it allowed drop-offs only. Reserved lots needed a vehicle-specific parking pass. The desk checks the 2027 plan before your booking date.
Where do Uber and taxis go on Derby Day?
In 2026 there was no onsite taxi or rideshare service on Oaks and Derby days. Riders used the Bronze Lot at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium and walked to the track, with no mobility assistance between the two. Paid parking there was US$40 for a car, paid on the day.
How do we find our car after the race?
With a lot pass, the chauffeur is parked in your assigned lot and you walk to the car. With a drop-off pass, the desk agrees a pickup point outside the closures in advance and sends it to you, with the chauffeur's phone number. Decide before the day whether you will leave early, late or straight after the Derby.
How much does a Derby Day chauffeur cost?
The 8-hour full-day package runs from US$700 in a Business Sedan to US$1,400 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed and all-in. Extra hours are priced by the hour, from US$95 to US$190. Parking and drop-off passes, tolls and parking are billed at cost, and every price is per vehicle.
Do we need our own parking pass?
Usually, yes. Passes come with certain tickets or are bought in advance from Churchill Downs, and they are issued for a specific vehicle type. Tell the desk which pass you hold so we book a matching vehicle, and arrange to give a physical pass to the chauffeur before the day.
