A wine tour limo is a chauffeured vehicle booked for a day of winery visits: the driver collects you at your hotel, takes the group from tasting to tasting at a planned pace and brings everyone home, so nobody has to drive after a day of wine. The vehicle can be a luxury sedan for a couple, an SUV for a small group or a 12-seat Executive Sprinter, which is the usual choice for groups because it carries the cases of wine bought along the way.

On Elly8.net price lists, a full wine day trip costs from US$630 for eight hours in a Business Sedan to Chianti from Florence, to US$1,840 for ten hours in an Executive Sprinter from San Francisco to Napa Valley, fixed and per vehicle. The difference between regions is mostly the drive: Woodinville is under half an hour from Seattle, while the Douro Valley is over an hour and a half from Porto.

How long should a wine tour limo be booked for?

Book the whole day: eight hours when the wine region is close, ten when it is an hour or more away. Visit Napa Valley recommends two or three winery visits a day, as most experiences take at least 90 minutes, so the drive out and back plus three tastings and lunch fills the day without rushing.

The temptation is to fit in five or six wineries. The official advice runs the other way. Visit Napa Valley suggests two or three visits, notes that many sit-down tastings start and end at set times, and that popular wineries can fill their reservations weeks in advance. A good wine day is built around the appointments, with the car fitted in between.

Drive times from the city to the vines

The table below gives routed drive times from a city centre to a typical first stop in each region, measured on the public OSRM road router for a clear road. Real times are longer at weekends and in harvest season.

The rule that follows from the table: when the drive each way is under 45 minutes, eight hours gives three relaxed tastings and a long lunch. When it is more than an hour, book ten hours, or the day becomes a sequence of drives with wine in between. From Napa itself the valley is short; downtown Napa to St. Helena is about 18 mi (29 km), roughly 23 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate, and the Napa Valley car service day trip to Napa and Sonoma is eight hours from US$740.

A wine day, hour by hour

This template works in most regions with a drive of about an hour each way.

  • 9:30 a.m. Pickup at the hotel. Breakfast first; tasting on an empty stomach makes for a short day.
  • 10:30 a.m. First appointment. Morning tastings are often quieter, and the palate is fresh.
  • 12:00 p.m. Short drive to the second winery, or straight to lunch.
  • 12:30 p.m. Lunch, ideally at a winery with a restaurant or a nearby village.
  • 2:30 p.m. Second or third tasting.
  • 4:00 p.m. Final stop, perhaps for purchases rather than a full tasting.
  • 5:00 p.m. Leave for the city, before the evening traffic builds.
  • 6:15 p.m. Back at the hotel.

That is about nine hours door to door, comfortably inside a ten-hour day trip and a little over an eight-hour one. Where the region is close, as in Woodinville, Chianti or Niagara-on-the-Lake, start at 10:30 and keep the same rhythm within eight hours.

Book the tastings before the car

Wineries set the timetable. Visit Napa Valley notes that some wineries have permit restrictions that limit the number of guests each day, and that small, off-the-beaten-track wineries need to know when you are coming. In British Columbia, Tourism Kelowna advises making reservations where possible, noting that some wineries require them, that many tasting rooms close 15 minutes before the posted closing time, and that you must be 19 or older to taste or buy wine in the province. It also reminds visitors that British Columbia has zero tolerance for drinking and driving, which is the whole case for a driver.

Book the appointments, then send the desk the list with times and addresses. The chauffeur plans the route between them and builds in the margin.

Choosing the vehicle

GroupVehicle (fleet table)Seats / bagsWhy
A coupleBusiness Sedan or First Class Sedan3 / 2Quiet and comfortable; enough space for a few bottles
Three to sixBusiness SUV or First Class SUV6 / 6Forward-facing seats and room for cases
Seven to twelveExecutive Sprinter12 / 12One vehicle, everyone together, space for purchases
CelebrationsStretch limousine or Rolls-Royce8 or 2 / 2Priced on the web booker; limited luggage space

Bag space is the hidden question on wine days. A sedan's two-bag allowance fills quickly with cases, and limousine-style vehicles carry very little. For any group that plans to buy wine, an SUV or Sprinter is the practical choice. Our limousine buses guide compares the larger vehicles.

What it costs, and what is included

Every Elly8.net day-trip price is fixed and per vehicle, never per person, and includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls and parking are billed at cost. Tasting fees, lunch and wine purchases are paid directly to the wineries and restaurants.

Tipping the winery hosts is separate from the chauffeur, whose gratuity is already in the fare. Visit Napa Valley suggests US$10 to US$15 per couple at a stand-up bar tasting and US$15 to US$20 per couple at a seated tasting, as a guide for Napa.

For a group of eight in an Executive Sprinter on the San Francisco to Napa Valley day trip, at US$1,840, the arithmetic is US$230 each, shown only for comparison; the price is the same if six people come. For a couple in a Business Sedan on the Chianti day from Florence, the whole day is US$630. For a fuller breakdown of how chauffeur prices are built, read chauffeur hire cost explained.

The regions in brief

Napa Valley. From San Francisco or Sacramento it is a ten-hour day; staying in Napa itself makes it eight, with Napa and Sonoma both in reach. See San Francisco to Napa wine country.

Niagara-on-the-Lake. Ontario's best-known wine country, a short drive from Niagara Falls and a longer one from Toronto, about 79 mi (127 km) and 1 hour 42 minutes on a clear road by our routed estimate. Tourism Niagara-on-the-Lake covers the town and its wineries. See Niagara Falls car service.

The Okanagan. Wineries in West Kelowna are about 11 minutes from downtown Kelowna by our routed estimate, so the drives between tastings are short. See Kelowna car service.

Chianti. The Chianti Classico wine area lies south of Florence, with Greve in Chianti about half an hour from the city by our routed estimate. See the Florence chauffeur.

The Douro Valley. The valley upriver from Porto, home of the wines overseen by the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto. Pinhão is about an hour and a half from Porto by our routed estimate, which is why the Douro day is ten hours. See the Porto car service.

Temecula, Santa Ynez, Woodinville and Fredericksburg. Day trips from San Diego, Santa Barbara, Seattle and Austin respectively; the Temecula Valley Winegrowers Association lists its member wineries.

Seasons and timing

Wine country changes through the year, and the season shapes the day. Harvest weeks in late summer and autumn are a busy time in every region on this list, so appointments and vehicles go early; book both as soon as your dates are set. Summer brings long days and heat in Napa, Temecula, the Hill Country and the Douro, which favours an early start and a long lunch indoors. Winter is quieter, and some tasting rooms keep shorter hours, so check before you plan; in Canada and the northern United States, winter roads are another reason to leave the driving to someone else. Whatever the month, ask each winery for its last tasting time, not its closing time.

Longer trips: two days and two regions

Some regions reward a second day. A couple based in San Francisco can do Napa one day and a city day the next; a group in Porto can spend one day in the Douro and the next on a private city highlights tour, four hours from US$340 in a Business Sedan. When the wine region is far from your hotel, consider staying a night in wine country and booking the transfer there and back as city to city car service, then a shorter local day with a driver. It shortens both days and leaves more time at the wineries.

Companies running client days or incentives in wine country can book several vehicles on one corporate account, with monthly invoicing and the itinerary planned in advance.

Celebrations among the vines

Wine days are popular for birthdays, anniversaries, bachelorette weekends and wedding parties. For a celebration, tell the desk the occasion when you book; the chauffeur plans the photographs and the timing around it. A Rolls-Royce or stretch limousine is quoted on the web booker for the special arrival, but for a full day with purchases an SUV or Sprinter is more practical. Our guide to the birthday limo covers the planning for a celebration night.

What to send the desk

  • The hotel address and pickup time.
  • The list of wineries, in order, with appointment times and addresses.
  • The lunch reservation, if any.
  • The number of guests and whether you plan to buy cases.
  • Any guests with limited mobility, so the vehicle suits them.
  • A mobile number for the organiser.

Wine tour limo vs the alternatives

Driving yourselves. Only works with a designated driver who does not taste. Cheapest on paper, least fun for the driver.

A shared tour. Small-group and coach tours sell seats individually and are good value for one or two people who are happy with a set itinerary and set wineries.

Taxis or app rides between wineries. Possible near towns, but rural wineries are spread out and a car may not be close when you need it. Few groups want to wait in a vineyard car park for a ride.

A private driver. Best for groups, special occasions, appointments at specific wineries, and anyone who wants to set the pace. Our wine tours page explains the service in each region.

Whichever you choose, the vehicle is not a tasting room. Rules on alcohol in vehicles differ by state, province and country, the chauffeur follows local rules, and we do not suggest drinking in the car.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a wine tour limo?

On Elly8.net's published price lists, a wine day trip costs from US$630 for eight hours in a Business Sedan in Chianti to US$1,840 for ten hours in an Executive Sprinter from San Francisco to Napa Valley. Prices are fixed per vehicle and include taxes and standard gratuity; tasting fees are separate.

How many wineries can we visit in a day?

Two or three, according to Visit Napa Valley, because most experiences take at least 90 minutes and there is travel time between them. With an hour's drive each way and a lunch stop, three tastings fill a ten-hour day comfortably.

Do we need winery reservations?

Usually, yes. Visit Napa Valley says popular wineries can fill reservations weeks in advance, and Tourism Kelowna notes some Okanagan wineries require bookings. Make the appointments first, then send the times and addresses to the desk so the chauffeur can plan the route.

Which vehicle is best for a wine tour?

For three to six people, a Business SUV or First Class SUV, with six seats and space for six bags or cases. For seven to twelve, an Executive Sprinter. Limousine-style vehicles look good but carry little, which matters if you plan to buy wine.

Is the price per person?

No. Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person. Dividing the fare by the group size is only arithmetic for comparison, and the price stays the same if fewer people come. It includes the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; tasting fees and purchases are paid at the wineries.

Can we drink in the vehicle?

Alcohol rules differ by state, province and country. The chauffeur follows local rules, and we do not suggest drinking in the vehicle. Enjoy the tastings at the wineries, and let the car do what it does best: get everyone there and home safely.
