Toronto to Ottawa by road is about 450 km (280 mi) from downtown Toronto to Parliament Hill, and routing tools put the clear-road drive at roughly five hours, before any stop. The usual route runs east on Highway 401 along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence, then north on Highway 416 into Ottawa. From Toronto Pearson the distance is a little longer, about 466 km.
A private car turns that into a door-to-door day: your Toronto home, hotel or office to your Ottawa address, with a chauffeur who knows when to leave, where to stop and how to time the arrival. This guide from the Elly8.net desk covers the drive time, the best places to break the journey, how the trip compares with VIA Rail and flying, and what it costs.
How long is the drive from Toronto to Ottawa?
About 450 km (280 mi) from downtown Toronto to Parliament Hill, roughly five hours of driving on a clear road via Highways 401 and 416. Toronto rush hour, snow and a lunch stop in Kingston add time. VIA Rail lists an average train time of 4 hours 36 minutes over 444 km, station to station.
The road distance and timing come from routing between downtown Toronto and Parliament Hill; the train figures are from VIA Rail's Toronto to Ottawa page, which lists 50 departures a week. In practice, a chauffeured trip with one proper stop takes most of a working day's morning or afternoon, door to door.
The route, stage by stage
Toronto to Kingston, about 265 km. Highway 401 east through Durham Region, past Port Hope and Cobourg, then along the north shore of Lake Ontario to Kingston. This is the stage most affected by Toronto traffic: the first hour can take much longer at peak times.
Kingston to the Highway 416 junction. The 401 continues east along the St. Lawrence through the Thousand Islands region towards Brockville and Prescott.
North on Highway 416 into Ottawa. The 416 runs straight north through farmland to the city's west and south sides, joining Highway 417 for downtown, Kanata or the east end.
An alternative is Highway 7 through Peterborough and Perth, a slower two-lane road with small towns and lakes. It suits a relaxed trip in autumn colour more than a deadline.
When to leave
The single biggest variable is the first hour out of Toronto.
- Mid-morning departures, after the morning peak on the 401, usually give the smoothest run and an early-afternoon arrival in Ottawa.
- Avoid Friday afternoons in summer if you can; eastbound traffic out of the GTA builds as weekend travellers leave.
- Evening departures after the afternoon peak are quiet but end late; a chauffeur handles the night driving, which is part of the point.
- Winter: allow more time. Lake-effect snow and freezing rain on the 401 corridor can slow everything. Your chauffeur will tell you if the forecast makes an earlier start sensible.
For an arrival that has to land on time, such as a meeting on the Hill or a dinner reservation, tell the desk the time you need to be there and we work back from it.
Where to stop on the way
Kingston. Almost exactly the halfway point and the natural lunch stop. The limestone downtown and waterfront are a short detour from the 401. Fort Henry, a National Historic Site run by the St. Lawrence Parks Commission, sits on the point across the Cataraqui River; Visit Kingston lists what is open by season. If you want more than a stop, Elly8.net also serves Kingston with its own price list, including a six-hour Thousand Islands day trip.
The Thousand Islands Parkway. East of Kingston, a short scenic detour along the river between Gananoque and Brockville, with island views in summer and autumn.
Brockville. The Aquatarium on the waterfront is a family stop that breaks the drive just before the turn north onto the 416.
A stop of 45 minutes to an hour for lunch is the norm on a chauffeured trip. If you want a longer visit in Kingston, an hourly booking or a full day is often simpler than a one-way transfer; ask the desk which suits your plan.
A sample chauffeured day
Here is how a typical Toronto to Ottawa trip runs for a family of four on a weekday, timed for a mid-afternoon arrival. Times are a plan, not a promise; traffic and weather move them.
- 9:30 a.m. Pickup at a Toronto address, after the morning peak. Cases loaded, child seat fitted before the chauffeur arrives.
- Around 12:15 p.m. Kingston. Lunch downtown or on the waterfront, a walk to stretch and, if there is time, a short visit to Fort Henry.
- Around 1:15 p.m. Back on the 401 east, along the river past the Thousand Islands.
- Mid-afternoon. North on Highway 416 into Ottawa, arriving at the hotel or a relative's home around 3:30 p.m., before the city's own afternoon rush.
For a business version, the same day might start at 7:00 a.m. with a 20-minute coffee stop and arrive in time for a 1:00 p.m. meeting near the Hill. The chauffeur keeps the cabin quiet for calls and the desk watches the timing. Companies that send teams between the two cities regularly can put these trips on a corporate account with monthly invoicing; see corporate car service.
What to tell the desk when you book
- The time you need to arrive, not only the time you want to leave. We plan backwards from the arrival.
- Every passenger and every bag, including folding strollers, sports equipment or a wheelchair, so we send the right vehicle.
- Children's ages and weights, for child seats on request.
- Stops you want, and roughly how long each should be.
- Your Ottawa address, or Gatineau address, since we treat both sides of the river as one area.
Toronto to Ottawa: car, train, flight or driving yourself
| Option | Time | Cost basis | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elly8.net private car | About 5 hours driving, door to door, plus stops | Fixed per vehicle, priced in the web booker | Families, groups, luggage, door-to-door trips |
| VIA Rail | Average 4 h 36 min, station to station, 444 km | Per person ticket | One or two travellers, working on board |
| Flight | Short flight, plus airport time at both ends | Per person ticket plus airport transfers | Tight same-day schedules |
| Driving yourself | About 5 hours, plus parking in Ottawa | Fuel, parking, your time | Travellers who want their own car all week |
Be honest about the alternatives. For one person travelling light, the train is excellent: about the same time as driving, with time to work, and it arrives at Ottawa station on Tremblay Road, east of downtown. A flight makes sense when the schedule is tight and you are already near an airport. If you need a car every day in Ottawa, driving yourself or renting may suit you; our chauffeur vs car rental comparison sets out the trade-off.
The private car wins when the trip is about more than one person and a laptop bag:
- Families, with children, car seats and luggage, door to door, with a lunch stop where you choose.
- Groups of 4 to 12. One Business SUV carries up to six people and six bags; an Executive Sprinter carries up to 12 with luggage. Per person, it can come close to several train tickets plus taxis at both ends.
- Students moving to Ottawa, with boxes, bags and a parent or two.
- Older travellers for whom two station transfers and platforms are the hard part.
- Business teams that want to talk privately on the way to a meeting on the Hill.
What the trip costs
A Toronto to Ottawa transfer is a long-distance, one-way trip, so it is priced exactly for your two addresses and your vehicle in the web booker under our city to city car service. The price is fixed and all-in before you pay: chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity included, with tolls and parking billed at cost. It is per vehicle, never per person.
Useful reference prices at each end, all fixed and in US$:
- Toronto: Pearson (YYZ) to downtown Toronto from US$155 in a business sedan; Billy Bishop (YTZ) to downtown from US$95.
- Ottawa: the airport (YOW) to Parliament Hill from US$105 in a business sedan to US$275 in an Executive Sprinter; hourly from US$110 in a business sedan, 3-hour minimum; a full day from US$810.
A ride that starts in Toronto or the GTA runs on the Elly8 fleet and chauffeurs. Rides in Ottawa are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Arriving in Ottawa
Most arrivals end on or near the Hill, at a university residence, at a hotel in the ByWard Market or Centretown, at Rogers Centre Ottawa on Colonel By Drive, or across the river in Gatineau. If you are visiting Parliament, the Parliament of Canada visitor site explains tours and security screening; we can drop you at the visitor entrance.
Highway 416 brings you into Ottawa from the south-west, so west-end and Kanata addresses come first, and Orléans in the east is the longest final leg. Gatineau addresses add a bridge crossing at the end. None of that changes a fixed price once it is booked.
Once you are there, the Ottawa car service page lists every local price, and our guides to Ottawa taxi or rideshare and the Ottawa airport shuttle vs private car cover getting around and getting out. Coming from the other direction? See Montreal to Ottawa by private car.
