For badge holders going to film screenings, the SXSW shuttle is complimentary and the obvious choice. A private car is better for teams moving between meetings, guests with luggage or equipment, late nights and anyone who needs to be somewhere on time. According to SXSW's guide to SXSW 2027, the festival has revamped its shuttle service, complimentary for all badge holders, so that people can reach screenings on time. That is genuinely useful, and we tell people to use it. It is built for one job, though: moving badge holders between festival venues. It will not take you from the airport, to a client dinner in South Congress, to an office meeting outside downtown, or back to a hotel at 2 a.m. with a guitar case.

Where SXSW happens in 2027
The pop-up Creative Village. The Austin Convention Center is closed for construction as part of its expansion and redevelopment, with completion expected in 2028, according to the Austin Convention Center. SXSW is building its Creative Village across downtown Austin instead, with more venues still to be announced. Expect sessions and activations in hotels, theatres and temporary spaces several blocks apart.
Film & TV venues. The historic Paramount Theatre is under construction for SXSW 2027, so premieres move to ACL Live at The Moody Theater. SXSW lists its 2027 Film & TV venues north of the river as ACL Live at The Moody Theater, the State Theatre, Violet Crown and AFS Cinema, which is not served by the shuttle, and south of the river as Zach Theatre, Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar and the Rollins Theatre.
Music, comedy and the nights. Showcases, parties and brand activations fill downtown, East Austin and the Rainey district late into the night. Streets close to traffic for crowds and events, and the closures shift from day to day.
The transport problem, honestly
- Street closures. Cars cannot reach many downtown doors during SXSW. The chauffeur and the desk agree a drop-off and pickup point that works around the closures, and confirm it each day. We never promise curbside at a venue that is inside a closure.
- Demand spikes. When a big session ends, thousands of people look for a ride in the same few blocks. App waits grow and app prices rise with demand.

Arriving at AUS
All airline service at AUS now runs through the Barbara Jordan Terminal; the separate South Terminal closed on April 1, 2026, according to the airport. The airport directs rideshare and taxi passengers to a shared pickup area under the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, behind the Red Garage, a walk from baggage claim that gets crowded during festivals, per the AUS ground transportation page. The drive from AUS to downtown is short on a clear road; during SXSW arrivals and on festival evenings it is not, and the fixed price does not change with traffic.
The plan for SXSW week
Arrival day. Book AUS with your flight number and your hotel. If your hotel sits inside a closure, the desk tells you the nearest point the car can reach before you land.
Conference days. A chauffeur by the hour, from US$95 in a business sedan with a 3-hour minimum, is the standard SXSW booking. Send the desk your schedule; the chauffeur waits at agreed points between sessions, and you message the chauffeur when you are walking out. Screenings and premieres. For screenings on the shuttle routes, use the shuttle. For a premiere at ACL Live followed by a dinner, or a screening at AFS Cinema, which the shuttle does not serve, an hourly car or the 5-hour evening package keeps you on time.

Honest alternatives: the shuttle, walking, the bus, rideshare
The SXSW shuttle. Complimentary for badge holders and built for screenings. If that is your day, use it.
Walking. Inside the Creative Village, many venues are a short walk apart, and walking is often the fastest way to cross a closure.
The airport bus. CapMetro's Route 20 serves the airport; a local single ride costs US$1.25 and a day pass US$2.50, and CapMetro has announced fare changes from January 10, 2027, so check the current fare on CapMetro before you travel. For a solo traveller with a backpack, it is hard to beat.
Rideshare and taxis. Fine for one or two people at quiet times. At peak moments during SXSW, the airport pickup area queues, prices move with demand, and downtown pickups are complicated by closures.
