For a week, downtown San Jose behaves like a campus that is too small for its visitors: hotel lobbies full, curbs crowded at session breaks, and the same few blocks around the convention center busy from breakfast to late evening. How should you get around GTC in San Jose?

The San Jose McEnery Convention Center is at 150 W. San Carlos Street in downtown San Jose. Its exhibit halls provide 143,000 square feet of space, expandable to 165,000 square feet of contiguous space, with about 520,000 square feet of combined meeting and event space, according to Team San Jose. Because GTC uses venues throughout the city as well as the convention center, attendees often walk between buildings for sessions, but the moment the agenda leaves downtown, a car matters.
The valley is the reason many attendees fly in for more than the conference. Mountain View, where our San Jose and Silicon Valley prices are centred, is about 14 miles (22 km) from the convention center, roughly 20 minutes on a clear road on our routing, and Palo Alto about 17.5 miles (28 km). Registration had not opened when we checked, and NVIDIA says it will launch later in the autumn. Keep an eye on the keynote and session schedule as it is published, because those times drive when everyone moves at once.
Arriving for GTC: SJC, SFO and Oakland
NVIDIA's FAQ puts Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) just three miles from the convention center, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) 38 miles away and Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK) 39 miles away.
SJC is the easy airport for GTC. The airport's limousine page says limousine service from the airport must be pre-arranged, and tells passengers where to find the reserved car: at Terminal A on the first floor of Hourly Lot 2 (the Terminal A garage) outside baggage claim, at International Arrivals from Stop 3 on the south-east side of Hourly Lot 2, and at Terminal B in Hourly Lot 5 outside baggage claim. App-booked premium rides use the rideshare stops instead. SFO has far more long-haul flights, so international attendees usually land there. The GTC day plan: sessions, meetings and the valley
Downtown-only days. If you are staying at a downtown hotel and your agenda is all sessions, you do not need a car between buildings. Save the booking for the airport and the evening.
Mixed days. This is the typical executive pattern: a keynote or two in the morning, a partner meeting at a Santa Clara campus at lunch, a customer briefing in Palo Alto in the afternoon and a dinner back in San Jose. An hourly chauffeur is the simplest way to run that day, from US$100 per hour in a Business Sedan with a three-hour minimum. The car waits at each stop and you message the chauffeur when you are ready.
Full meeting days. For longer schedules, the packages are simpler. Hotels first, then the car
NVIDIA says EventSphere is the only official housing provider for GTC and warns against third parties that contact attendees claiming to sell conference rooms. Book your room through the official channel first, then book the car: where you sleep decides the whole transport plan.
A downtown San Jose hotel puts you within walking distance of the convention center, and you may only need the airport legs and one or two evenings. A hotel in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto or Mountain View suits attendees who also work at a campus that week, but it adds a commute on US-101 or I-280 each morning, and that is where a chauffeur who knows the timing matters. San Jose has good options for a single traveller. VTA Route 60, the Airport Flyer, is free from either SJC terminal to the Metro/Airport light rail station and the Santa Clara Transit Center, according to SJC's public transit guide, and Caltrain runs up the Peninsula to San Francisco. SJC taxis charge a metered US$15 for the first mile, US$4 for each additional mile and US$1 per waiting minute; for a short ride downtown that is often the cheapest answer, and SJC is only a few miles from the convention center.
