Spain's National Day, the Día de la Fiesta Nacional, falls on 12 October every year, and in 2027 that is a Tuesday. The date is fixed by Law 18/1987, and the central act takes place in Madrid: a parade of the Armed Forces, the State security forces and civil institutions, presided over by the King and Queen. In 2026 the act began at 11:00, and the Ministry of Defence put the parade at around 4,400 participants, with about 50 aircraft and some 30 helicopters overhead, around 144 vehicles and 39 motorcycles in the motorised column, and roughly 300 horses.
That puts the parade right through the part of Madrid where many visitors stay. In 2025 and 2026 the route ran along the Paseo del Prado and the Paseo de Recoletos, and in 2026 it started at the Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V and finished at the Plaza de Colón: the museum mile and the edge of the Salamanca district. Elly8.net books the ground transport around it: Barajas transfers, early drop-offs for invited guests, an hourly car that waits outside the closures, and evening cars for the receptions and dinners that follow. Every price is fixed and all-in.
What does the 12 October parade mean for getting around Madrid?
On parade morning, the route itself and the streets that feed it close to traffic, and the hotels along the Paseo del Prado sit inside that area. Arrive the day before, plan a drop-off on a side street well ahead of 11:00, keep a car on hourly standby outside the closures, and expect road access to return gradually after the end of the act.
A parade with heavy vehicles, horses and a royal presence changes the centre of Madrid for the morning. The route cannot carry ordinary traffic, and every year thousands of people come into the centre to watch, so any car that tries to reach the Paseo del Prado at 10:30 loses time it cannot recover. The city's own airport bus is a good illustration: esmadrid.com notes that when Plaza de Cibeles or the Paseo del Prado close to traffic for gatherings, the Airport Express runs along Calle de Alfonso XII instead and the Cibeles stop moves to the Puerta de Alcalá.
The answer is a pre-booked chauffeur with the day's closure plan and an agreed meeting point you can walk to, built around your invitation, your hotel and the published route.
The route, the timing and what to plan around
The Ministry of Defence's National Day site publishes the programme and the route each year. For 2026 the sequence ran from the arrival of the King and Queen at 11:00 through military honours, the review, the parachute jump with the national flag, the raising of the flag, the homage to those who gave their lives for Spain, the air parade, the ground parade and the farewell. The route for 2027 will be confirmed by the Ministry closer to the date; check that page before you finalise times, and we will adjust your booking to whatever is published.
What does not change is the geography. The Paseo del Prado and Recoletos are the spine of the Golden Triangle of Art, with the Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofía museums and the grand hotels around Plaza de Neptuno and Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo. Plaza de Colón, where the 2026 route ended, is the point where Recoletos becomes the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's business axis. Salamanca's hotels and boutiques start a few blocks east.
| Place | Where it sits on parade day | How we plan it |
|---|---|---|
| Barajas (MAD) | About 19 km (12 mi) from the Salamanca district, about 19 minutes on a clear road | Land the day before, or very early on the day with a long margin |
| Hotels on the Paseo del Prado | Beside the 2026 route | Walk out, or be collected on a side street agreed in advance |
| Salamanca district | East of Recoletos and Colón | Drop-offs on side streets; the chauffeur waits outside the closures |
| Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V and Atocha | Start of the 2026 route | Arrange train pickups away from the route side of the station area |
| Paseo de la Castellana and AZCA | North of Colón | Business addresses usually reachable; allow extra time crossing the centre |
Clear-road times mean little near the centre on 12 October. Expect the desk to suggest an earlier departure than any map app, a drop-off a short walk from your destination, and a pickup at the same place once the act has finished.
Arriving: Barajas the day before, and the train into Atocha
Madrid-Barajas (MAD). Madrid-Barajas has two separate terminal complexes, Terminals 1, 2 and 3 side by side, and Terminal 4 with its satellite T4S, home to Iberia and its oneworld partners. Give the desk your flight number and the chauffeur meets you in the right arrivals hall with a name board, tracks the landing and waits, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. A fixed transfer from Barajas to the Salamanca district and the Golden Triangle runs from US$120 in a business sedan to US$315 in an Executive Sprinter, with a Business SUV at US$160 and a First Class Sedan at US$210. See Madrid airport transfers and meet and greet.
Our advice for anyone with a role on the day is to land on 11 October. A transatlantic flight landing at T4 at 08:30 on parade morning leaves little room for passport control, bags and a cross-city drive into closures.
Atocha by train. Guests coming from Barcelona, Seville or Málaga by high-speed train often arrive at Atocha, at the southern end of the 2026 route. Tell the desk your train and coach, and the chauffeur sets a meeting point that works around the closures that morning. See train station transfers.
The plan for parade morning
Invited guests and the stands. If you are invited to the official stands, follow the access instructions that come with your invitation and forward them to the desk with your booking. The chauffeur drops you as close as those instructions and the police allow, normally on a side street with a short walk, and well before the start of the act. When the act ends, you walk back to the same agreed point, or to a second one if the desk recommends it.
A car on standby. Most clients keep the car by the hour rather than booking two one-way trips, because nobody knows exactly when the streets will reopen. In Madrid the hourly service runs from US$85 an hour in a business sedan, US$110 in a Business SUV, US$130 in a First Class SUV and US$140 in a First Class Sedan, to US$170 in an Executive Sprinter, with a 3-hour minimum. The chauffeur waits outside the closures and moves to meet you as soon as you message. See hourly chauffeur service.
Families watching from the street. If you are bringing children to see the air parade, the chauffeur drops you at an agreed corner with time to find a place and collects you when you are ready. Child seats are available on request.
Teams and groups. One Executive Sprinter is simpler than several cars in a congested centre. See Sprinter van with driver and group transportation.
After the parade: receptions, lunches and the rest of the day
The parade is a morning event, and for many visitors the rest of 12 October is a long lunch, a reception or an afternoon at a museum. The evening out and event night package covers a dinner and the drive home, from US$425 in a business sedan and US$550 in a Business SUV to US$850 in an Executive Sprinter.
For a principal or a corporate host with a full calendar, the full-day chauffeur (8 hours) runs from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, and the corporate roadshow day (10 hours) from US$765 to US$1,530, all-in per vehicle. Visitors who want to see Madrid properly once the streets reopen can book the private city highlights tour, from US$340 in a business sedan to US$680 in a Sprinter; see private city tours.
Because 12 October 2027 is a Tuesday, some visitors turn the trip into a long weekend. The signature Madrid day trip is an 8-hour private day to Toledo, from US$630 in a business sedan to US$1,255 in an Executive Sprinter, and it works well on 11 October or the day after the parade.
Diplomats, officials and corporate guests
Diplomats, officials and business guests need discretion more than display. Elly8.net signs NDAs on request, sends chauffeur and vehicle details in advance when an access list needs them, and can keep the same chauffeur across several days. Chauffeurs do not discuss passengers or schedules. See government, diplomatic and delegation transportation.
Elly8.net is a chauffeured car service, not a security company: no armoured vehicles, protective drivers or escorts, and our cars never try to enter a closed zone. Official movements travel in the arrangements made by the State, and our chauffeurs follow every instruction from police and stewards.
Rides in Madrid are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
Elly8.net vs taxi, bus, Metro and rideshare on 12 October
Madrid's public options are good, and on an ordinary day they are often the right choice. A taxi between the airport and any address inside the M-30 ring road costs a flat €33, around the clock, with no supplements, according to the tourism board's guide to getting around Madrid by taxi. The Airport Express bus runs 24 hours a day from the terminals to O'Donnell, Plaza de Cibeles and, in the daytime, Atocha, for €5.10 a ticket.
| Option | Price | On parade morning | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport Express bus | €5.10 per person | Diverted along Calle de Alfonso XII when Cibeles or the Paseo del Prado close | Solo travellers arriving the day before |
| Metro | Metro fare, per person | Often the quickest way to the edge of the closures | Spectators with no luggage |
| Madrid taxi | €33 flat between the airport and the M-30 area | Same closures as any car; no waiting for you | A quick arrival the day before |
| Rideshare | Varies with demand | Pickups near closed streets can be slow | Light travellers comfortable with apps |
| Elly8.net business sedan | From US$120 MAD transfer; from US$85 an hour | Agreed drop-off and pickup outside the closures, car waits | Guests, families, teams, fixed budgets |
Fairly put: for one traveller with a carry-on arriving the day before, the €33 taxi or the express bus is hard to beat, and on the morning the Metro gets a spectator to the edge of the closures quickly. A chauffeur wins for a guest with a timed arrival, a family with seats, a team in one vehicle, or a host who needs a car waiting when the act ends.
