The Festa della Repubblica marks the referendum of 2 June 1946, when Italians voted to become a republic, and 2 June is fixed in the calendar as a national holiday. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday. The centrepiece in Rome is the morning ceremony and military parade. In the Presidency of the Republic's programme for 2026, the President laid a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria at 9.15, in the presence of the highest offices of state, received the presentation of the troops in Via di San Gregorio, and then watched the parade from the presidential stand on Via dei Fori Imperiali. The detailed 2027 programme is published by the Presidency in the last days of May.
The day before matters too. Each year on 1 June the President receives the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Italy for a concert at the Quirinale, and in recent years the Quirinale Gardens have opened that morning. For embassies and delegations, that makes 1 and 2 June a two-day schedule.
For anyone in Rome on 2 June, the day reshapes the centre. The streets around the parade route close before dawn, bus lines divert, a metro station shuts and the security perimeter takes in the very places most visitors want to see. Delegations, invited guests, embassy staff and corporate hosts still need to arrive on time and leave cleanly. Elly8.net plans that around the published closures, with fixed, all-in prices from both Rome airports and chauffeurs by the hour that do not change for the holiday.
How do you get around Rome on 2 June, parade day?
Plan to be dropped and collected outside the closed area. In recent years Roma Mobilità closed Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza del Colosseo and nearby streets from about 5 a.m., with Piazza Venezia following later and roads reopening from about 1:30 p.m. Invited guests follow the instructions on their pass; a pre-booked car waits at the nearest open point.
The closures follow a consistent pattern, as published by Roma Mobilità, the city's mobility agency, for recent editions. For 2024 it announced the first closures overnight in Via dei Cerchi, by the Circus Maximus, with bans extending from 5 a.m. to Via di San Gregorio, Via Celio Vibenna, Piazza del Colosseo, Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza Venezia, Via del Corso and the Circo Massimo area, and a gradual reopening from 1:30 p.m. The bus terminals at Piazza Venezia and Via del Teatro Marcello were suspended and lines rerouted, and Colosseo station on metro line B closed from the start of service. In 2023 Piazza Venezia, Via Cesare Battisti and Via IV Novembre closed from 7 a.m.
The 2027 plan will appear on Roma Mobilità shortly before the day. We read it when it is published and set each pickup and drop-off point against it, so a guest is never left at a barrier with no car on the other side.
Who travels for Republic Day
The parade is a state occasion, attended by the highest offices of state and watched by large crowds along the route, with the diplomatic corps in Rome closely involved across the two days. Around them move the people who need reliable cars: embassy and delegation staff, guests holding invitations to the stands, journalists and production crews, and companies hosting clients for the holiday. Many North American visitors simply find themselves in Rome that week and want to know how the day affects their plans.
Because 2 June is a public holiday, it often becomes a long weekend for Romans, with heavy traffic on the roads out of the city. That matters for anyone heading to the airport, the coast or a day trip that day: leave margin.
Arriving in Rome: Fiumicino and Ciampino
Nonstop flights from the United States and Canada land at Fiumicino (FCO), where Aeroporti di Roma assigns Terminal 3 to extra-Schengen and intercontinental flights. Ciampino (CIA), south-east of the city, handles mostly European short-haul flights and business aviation. Both are on our fixed price list to the historic centre, per vehicle and all-in:
| Airport | Distance to the centre | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiumicino (FCO) | 34 km (21 mi), about 54 min clear | US$180 | US$235 | US$315 | US$470 |
| Ciampino (CIA) | 18 km (11 mi), about 30 min clear | US$125 | US$165 | US$220 | US$325 |
Round trips start at US$345 from Fiumicino and US$240 from Ciampino in a business sedan. The chauffeur tracks the flight, waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal with a name board and helps with the bags, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. If your delegation arrives by private or state aircraft, the chauffeur meets you at the handler's terminal; see private jet and FBO transfers and airport transfers.
If you land on the morning of 2 June, tell the desk where you are staying. Hotels near Piazza Venezia, Monti and the Colosseum may be inside or beside the closed area until early afternoon, and the chauffeur will take you to the closest open point or hold the car until the roads reopen.
The ZTL, the holiday and licensed cars
Rome's historic centre is normally governed by limited traffic zones. According to Roma Mobilità's ZTL page, the daytime ZTL Centro Storico applies from 6.30 to 18.00 on weekdays and 14.00 to 18.00 on Saturdays, excluding public holidays, and taxis and licensed hire cars with driver (NCC) are exempt from the Centro Storico and Tridente rules. On a holiday like 2 June the daytime ZTL does not apply, but the parade closures do, and they override everything. A licensed chauffeur's advantage that day is local knowledge and a pre-agreed meeting point, not access to closed streets.
The parade-day plan
Invited guests and delegations. Passes for the stands come with instructions on where to enter and at what time; the security perimeter is set by the authorities, not by any transport company. Your chauffeur drops you at the access point named on the pass, or as close as the closures allow, and waits at an agreed point outside the perimeter. After the ceremony, when the crowd moves at once, a meeting point a few streets away is quicker than waiting at the exit.
Visitors watching the parade. If you plan to watch from the route, the car is useful at both ends: an early drop at the edge of the closed zone, and a pickup somewhere sensible once the parade ends, rather than a taxi search near a closed metro station. Sightseeing plans for that morning should move away from the Forum and the Colosseum; the Vatican Museums or the Borghese are better choices, and the afternoon is usually clear for the centre once roads reopen.
Business meetings and embassies. Many offices are closed for the holiday, but receptions and national-day events are common around it. An hourly car on standby handles the shifts in timing that ceremonial days bring.
Prices for the day and the week
Rome hourly and package prices, per vehicle and all-in:
| Package | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| By the hour, as directed (3-hour minimum) | US$85 per hour | US$110 per hour | US$140 per hour | US$170 per hour |
| Evening out & event night (5 hours) | US$425 | US$550 | US$700 | US$850 |
| Full-day chauffeur (8 hours) | US$630 | US$810 | US$1,035 | US$1,255 |
| Corporate roadshow day (10 hours) | US$765 | US$990 | US$1,260 | US$1,530 |
A delegation's parade day, from an early hotel pickup to the end of the afternoon receptions, usually fits the Full-day chauffeur or the 10-hour Corporate roadshow day. Prices include the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes, standard gratuity and airport meet and greet; parking, tolls and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost. The list does not change for the holiday. Hotels and cars fill in the days around 2 June, so reserve as soon as your dates are set; cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup.
Delegations, embassies and discretion
Elly8.net works with government offices, embassies and the travel teams behind official visits. A delegation typically needs one lead car, an SUV for staff, and an Executive Sprinter, which seats up to 12 passengers with luggage, for the wider party. All vehicles book under one reference, with a 24/7 desk that handles changes as schedules move. See government and diplomatic transportation and group transportation.
The desk can sign an NDA on request, and chauffeurs are briefed only on what they need for the route. Elly8.net provides transportation, not security: close protection and motorcade arrangements are a matter for the relevant authorities and security providers. Official travel teams can open a corporate account for monthly invoicing with a reference per traveller, and agencies can book through travel-agent accounts.
The honest alternatives
| Option | Cost | Best for | Weak point on 2 June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leonardo Express to Termini | €14 per person | Solo travellers with light bags | Ends at Termini; onward trip around closures |
| Licensed taxi from FCO | €55 fixed per car inside the Aurelian Walls | Two people, no special needs | Rank queues; drivers face the same closures |
| Licensed taxi from CIA | €40 fixed per car inside the Aurelian Walls | Short-haul arrivals | Same closures |
| Metro and walking | Standard fare | Watching the parade on foot | Colosseo station has closed on recent parade days |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | From US$180 from FCO; US$85 per hour | Delegations, families, groups, fixed budgets | Book early; drop points outside the closed zone |
The fixed taxi fares are published by Roma Mobilità, and Trenitalia runs the Leonardo Express between Fiumicino and Roma Termini in 32 minutes. For one traveller with a carry-on, the train is good value; for two people without special needs, Rome's fixed-fare taxi is honest. On parade day itself, walking is often the fastest way across the closed area. A pre-booked chauffeur wins for delegations on a timetable, families, groups, guests with mobility needs, and anyone who wants the car waiting at a known point when the ceremony ends. Compare the options on chauffeur vs taxi and chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft.
Beyond the parade
With the centre closed for the morning, the holiday is a good day to leave the city. The Tivoli day trip to Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa (6 hours) runs from US$470 in a business sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter, and the Private city highlights tour, from US$340, works well on the afternoon or the following day. Turismo Roma lists what is open over the holiday. All prices are on the Rome car service page.
Many visitors combine Rome with Florence, the Amalfi Coast and Naples, Venice or Milan; for chauffeured transfers between them, see city-to-city car service. Flights and hotels are booked through our travel partner BookingWorldwide.net; Elly8.net books the car.
How booking works
Rides in Rome are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, and seven or newer for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley. Elly8.net is a member of LWD, LAI, HWD and VWD: LimousineWorldwide.Directory, LimousineAssociation.International, HotelsWorldwide.Directory and VacationsWorldwide.Directory.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Festa della Repubblica in 2027?
On Wednesday 2 June 2027. The date is a fixed national holiday commemorating the 1946 referendum. The ceremony at the Altare della Patria and the parade on Via dei Fori Imperiali take place in the morning; in 2026 the wreath was laid at 9.15. The Presidency of the Republic publishes the detailed programme in the last days of May.
Which roads close for the 2 June parade?
The 2027 plan is published by Roma Mobilità shortly before the day. In recent years Via dei Fori Imperiali, Piazza del Colosseo, Via di San Gregorio, Via del Corso, Piazza Venezia and the Circo Massimo area closed from early morning, with roads reopening gradually from about 1:30 p.m. Bus lines are rerouted and Colosseo metro station has closed.
Can a chauffeur drive me to the stands?
Only as far as the authorities allow. Invited guests receive access instructions with their pass, and the security perimeter is set by the authorities. The chauffeur drops you at the named access point or the nearest open street and waits at an agreed meeting point outside the perimeter.
What does a Fiumicino transfer cost?
Fiumicino to the historic centre is US$180 in a business sedan, US$235 in a business SUV and US$470 in an Executive Sprinter, fixed per vehicle and all-in, with flight tracking, meet and greet in arrivals and complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Ciampino starts at US$125.
Do you work with embassies and delegations?
Yes. Delegations book several vehicles under one reference, from a lead sedan to Executive Sprinters for the wider party, with monthly invoicing on a corporate account and an NDA on request. Elly8.net provides transportation, not security; protection is arranged separately with the relevant authorities.
Is it better to take a taxi on parade day?
For two people without luggage, a fixed-fare licensed taxi is fine, but every taxi faces the same closures and queues form at ranks near the route. A pre-booked chauffeur is better when you need a set meeting point, travel as a group, or keep to an official timetable.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup and it is free. At 72 hours or less the fee is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less, or a no-show, 100%. Refunds go to the original card.
