Christmas at the Vatican is two days of papal celebrations: the Mass of the Nativity on the night of 24 December in St Peter's Basilica, often still called Midnight Mass, and on 25 December the Mass during the Day followed by the Urbi et Orbi blessing from the Central Loggia of the basilica. In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday and Christmas Day on a Friday. The Holy See publishes the times of each celebration in its calendar of activities on vatican.va, and the December 2026 entries were not yet posted when this page was written, so check the official times before you fix pickups.
Elly8.net books the car around the celebrations: a chauffeur at Fiumicino or Ciampino when you land, a drop-off as close to St Peter's Square as the day's arrangements allow, and a car waiting in a quiet street in Prati or the Borgo when the crowds leave late at night. Rome prices are fixed, all-in, charged in US dollars, and they do not change for Christmas.
How do you get to St Peter's for Christmas night Mass?
Book a chauffeur to drop you in Prati or the Borgo, a short walk from the square, with time for crowds and checks at the entrance. After the Mass, the chauffeur waits at an agreed corner away from the square. The evening out package in Rome, five hours with one car, costs from US$425 in a business sedan.
St Peter's Square is about 3 km (2 mi) from the historic centre, roughly seven minutes on an empty road. On Christmas night the problem is not distance but crowds. Far more people want to be near the basilica than it can hold, and the streets of the Borgo between the square and the Tiber fill up long before the celebration begins. In 2025, Pope Leo XIV greeted the faithful who had followed the night Mass on the large screens in the square, telling them the basilica was very large but not large enough to receive everyone, according to the Vatican's record of Christmas night 2025.
That is why the plan matters. The chauffeur sets you down on the edge of the area, where traffic is still moving, walks you through the meeting point for later, and waits in a street you both know. When you leave, you walk away from the crowd rather than into it.
Tickets: free, and requested from the Holy See
Tickets for papal liturgical celebrations are always free of charge, the Holy See says on its page for tickets to papal audiences and celebrations. Lay faithful request them from the Prefecture of the Papal Household; bishops, priests and deacons who wish to concelebrate use a separate procedure through the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff. Anyone offering paid tickets is not an official channel.
Request tickets first, then book the car to the times on them. Without a ticket for the basilica, many visitors follow the Mass on the screens in the square, which means standing outside on a December night; the chauffeur can collect you as soon as you decide to leave.
The two days at a glance
| When | Celebration | Where | What it means for the car |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday 24 December 2026, night | Mass of the Nativity of the Lord | St Peter's Basilica, screens in the square | Drop-off with time to spare; late pickup from Prati or the Borgo |
| Friday 25 December 2026, morning | Mass during the Day | St Peter's Basilica | Morning drop-off near the square |
| Friday 25 December 2026, midday | Urbi et Orbi blessing | Central Loggia of St Peter's Basilica, over the square | Pickup after the blessing, lunch reservations |
The 2025 pattern was the same: night Mass in the basilica on Wednesday 24 December, the Mass during the Day in the basilica on 25 December, and the Urbi et Orbi blessing from the Central Loggia on Christmas Day. The exact 2026 times come from the Holy See; we schedule to them.
Christmas Day in Rome is also a day of long family lunches, and many restaurants take fixed seatings. A car that collects you after the blessing and takes you to lunch, then back to the hotel, removes the hunt for a taxi on the one day when the city slows down. The evening package or an hourly booking covers both.
Arriving in Rome for Christmas
Most visitors from North America land at Fiumicino, often on Christmas Eve morning. Fiumicino is on the Vatican's side of the city, about 31 km (19 mi) from St Peter's Square by road.
| Airport | Distance to the historic centre | Clear-road drive | Business Sedan | Business SUV | First Class Sedan | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiumicino (FCO) | 34 km / 21 mi | about 54 min | US$180 | US$235 | US$315 | US$470 |
| Ciampino (CIA) | 18 km / 11 mi | about 30 min | US$125 | US$165 | US$220 | US$325 |
The same fares cover central Rome, including Prati and the hotels near the Vatican. Round trips from Fiumicino cost from US$345 in a business sedan to US$895 in an Executive Sprinter. Aeroporti di Roma assigns intercontinental flights to Terminal 3, so that is usually where arrivals from the United States and Canada come out. The chauffeur tracks the landing, waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, and gives you complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. See Rome airport transfers and meet and greet.
A practical note: if you land on the morning of the 24th, the night Mass is your first evening in Rome after an overnight flight. Many families arrive a day or two earlier, book the Vatican Museums on a quieter day (check their holiday opening calendar), and keep Christmas Eve free.
Where to stay and where to be collected
Prati. The grid of streets north of the Vatican has many hotels and wide, regular streets, which makes it the easiest district for a late pickup. A five-minute walk from the colonnade gets you back to moving traffic.
The Borgo. The old streets between the square and Castel Sant'Angelo are the closest to the basilica and the most crowded on the night. Good for walking; harder for a car.
The historic centre. Hotels around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps are a short drive across the Tiber. Rome's limited traffic zones, the ZTL, control access to the centre, but Roma Servizi per la Mobilità lists taxis and licensed hire cars with driver as exempt from the ZTL Centro Storico, and the daytime zone does not apply on public holidays. A licensed chauffeur can reach your hotel door within the usual limits of pedestrian streets.

The rates are the same on 24 and 25 December as on any other day, but the number of cars free on Christmas night is limited, so reserve now. For the night Mass, the evening package is usually right: it covers the drop-off, the wait and the drive back. See event transportation and hourly chauffeur service.
Families, pilgrim groups and official visitors
Families travelling with children can ask for child seats when they book; give the ages and the partner fits them before pickup. A Business SUV takes four passengers with transatlantic luggage, and an Executive Sprinter keeps a large family or a parish group together, with one meeting point after the celebration. See group transportation and Sprinter van with driver.
Delegations and official visitors attending the Christmas celebrations can book several cars under one reference. The desk signs NDAs on request and briefs each chauffeur only on approved names and routes. Elly8.net provides transportation, not security; protective arrangements are a matter for the visitor's own team. See government, diplomatic and delegation transportation. Travel agents and pilgrimage organisers can book on account through travel-agent accounts, companies through a corporate account, and hotels through hotel accounts.
Honest alternatives: train, taxi and walking
Rome's options are good, and on Christmas Eve many visitors staying near the Vatican simply walk.
| Option | Cost | Best for | Weak point at Christmas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking from Prati or the Borgo | Free | Hotels within 15 minutes of the square | Long walk back at night from the centre |
| Leonardo Express FCO to Termini | €14 per person | Solo arrivals staying near Termini | Ends at Termini, across the city from the Vatican |
| Licensed taxi from FCO | €55 fixed per car inside the Aurelian Walls | Two travellers, no booking | Rank queues; few free cabs near the square after Mass |
| Licensed taxi from CIA | €40 fixed per car inside the Aurelian Walls | Short-haul arrivals | Same |
| Rideshare | Varies with demand | Off-peak hops | Pickups in crowds are slow |
| Elly8.net chauffeur | FCO from US$180; evening from US$425 | Families, groups, late nights | Book early for 24 December |
Trenitalia runs the Leonardo Express nonstop between Fiumicino and Roma Termini for €14. Rome's licensed taxis charge fixed fares from the airports, €55 per car from Fiumicino and €40 from Ciampino to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls, supplements included, according to Roma Mobilità. If your hotel is a short walk from St Peter's, walking is the right answer for the celebrations themselves. A chauffeur earns its place when you are staying across the river, travelling with children or older relatives, leaving after midnight, or simply want the car to be there. After Christmas: Tivoli, Florence and the coast
The days between Christmas and New Year suit a drive out of the city. The signature Rome day trip, six hours to Tivoli for Villa d'Este and Hadrian's Villa, costs from US$470 in a business sedan to US$940 in an Executive Sprinter; check the villas' holiday opening days first. See private city tours.
Elly8.net also covers Florence, the Amalfi Coast and Naples, Venice, Milan, Lake Como and, for skiing after the holidays, St. Moritz. A city-to-city car service or a train station transfer at Termini links them. More on the city is on our Rome chauffeur service page. Flights and hotels can be booked with our travel partner BookingWorldwide.net; Elly8.net books the car.

Frequently asked questions
When are the Christmas celebrations at the Vatican in 2026?
The Mass of the Nativity is celebrated on the night of Thursday 24 December 2026, and the Mass during the Day and the Urbi et Orbi blessing on Friday 25 December. The Holy See publishes the exact times in its calendar of activities; book the car once they are posted, and the desk adjusts pickups if they change.
Do I need a ticket for Christmas night Mass?
For the basilica, yes. Tickets for papal celebrations are always free, and lay faithful request them from the Prefecture of the Papal Household, as explained on vatican.va. Paid offers are not official. Many visitors without tickets follow the celebration on the screens in St Peter's Square.
Where will the chauffeur drop me off?
As close to St Peter's Square as the day's arrangements allow, usually in Prati or near the Borgo, where traffic still moves. The chauffeur agrees a pickup corner away from the crowd, so you walk out of the square towards the car rather than waiting in it.
How much is a car for Christmas night?

Yes. Ask for child or booster seats when you book and give the children's ages. A Business SUV takes four passengers with large cases, and an Executive Sprinter keeps a big family or a parish group together with one pickup point after the celebration.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup. At 72 hours or less a 10% fee applies, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. Refunds return to the original card. Plans change over the holidays, so check the dates in your booking.
