St. John's to Gros Morne National Park is about 700 km (440 mi) by road, almost the full width of the island of Newfoundland. On our routing, the drive from downtown St. John's to Rocky Harbour, the main community inside the park, is roughly 711 km and a little under nine hours on a clear road, before any stops. Most of it is the Trans-Canada Highway to Deer Lake, followed by the short run north into the park.
That makes it a full travel day, not a day trip. The choice is between driving it yourself in a rental, flying from St. John's to Deer Lake and renting there, taking the bus, or booking a private chauffeured car so nobody in the group has to drive nine hours. This guide covers the route, the stops worth planning around, the best time to leave, a fair comparison of each option, and how a private car is priced.
How long is the drive from St. John's to Gros Morne?
About 700 km (440 mi) and roughly 8 to 9 hours of driving from St. John's to Rocky Harbour in the park, mostly on the Trans-Canada Highway to Deer Lake. With fuel, meals and one or two sightseeing stops, plan for 10 to 11 hours door to door, and leave early to arrive in daylight.
The distances below come from our own routing from downtown St. John's on a clear road. Real times depend on weather, construction season and how long you stop.

The route, stage by stage
St. John's to Terra Nova. The first three hours leave the Avalon Peninsula and head north-west on the Trans-Canada. Parks Canada describes Terra Nova National Park as 250 km north-west of St. John's and 60 km south-east of Gander, with the Trans-Canada running straight through it. Visitor services operate from the Victoria Day weekend to the Thanksgiving weekend, so a summer or early-autumn crossing can include a short walk and a coffee among the trees.
Terra Nova to Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. Gander is the obvious lunch stop, about four and a half hours from St. John's. Grand Falls-Windsor, another hour on, is the last larger town before the long western stretch, and a good place for fuel and a break.
Grand Falls-Windsor to Deer Lake. This is the longest uninterrupted part of the drive, through forest and open country, with towns further apart. It is the stretch where a driver who has already done six hours starts to feel it, and the reason many visitors would rather not be the one at the wheel.
Deer Lake into the park. Parks Canada says the park is 30 minutes from Deer Lake airport, and the airport is 35 km from the southern park boundary. From Deer Lake you turn off the Trans-Canada and head into the park, passing the Wiltondale entrance kiosk, which Parks Canada staffs from mid-May to early October, and on to Rocky Harbour.
Splitting the crossing over two days
Not every group wants ten hours in a vehicle in one go, and the island rewards a slower crossing. The most natural split is around the halfway point. Terra Nova National Park, a little over three hours from St. John's, has around 80 km of hiking trails, front-country camping and oTENTik shelters, and Parks Canada promotes it as a dark sky preserve, so an evening there can be the highlight of the trip rather than a stop on the way. Gander, about an hour further on, is the alternative for travellers who prefer a hotel.
Splitting the drive changes how you book a private car. Rather than one long transfer, book the first day as a trip from St. John's to your overnight stop, and the second as a separate trip on to Gros Morne, each priced in the web booker for its exact addresses. Tell the desk if you would like the same vehicle class both days. Each day is quoted on its own, so compare the two quotes with a single crossing before you decide; for families with young children or older travellers, the two-day plan is often the more comfortable one.
When to leave, and when to go
Leave early. With 10 to 11 hours door to door, a 7 a.m. departure from St. John's puts you in Rocky Harbour around dinner time in summer. In September and October, daylight runs out sooner, and the last stretch is better done before dark.
Pick the season. Gros Morne National Park is open year-round, with a peak season from May to October and a low season from October to May. The Western Brook Pond boat tour runs from mid-May to mid-October, and Parks Canada recommends reserving. Outside the season, the Visitor Centre in Rocky Harbour keeps reduced weekday hours, and some facilities close.
Book the boat before the car. If your trip is built around Western Brook Pond, reserve the boat tour first and plan the drive around it. Departures depend on wind and weather, so leave a spare day in the park if you can.
What to see once you arrive
Parks Canada describes Gros Morne as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shaped by colliding continents and glaciers. A few highlights shape most itineraries:
- Western Brook Pond. A land-locked, glacier-carved fjord with cliffs and waterfalls, and one of the park's signature experiences. From the parking lot, a moderate 3 km trail of about 45 minutes leads to the dock, and the boat tour itself lasts about two hours with live interpretation.
- The Tablelands. A rare outcrop of the Earth's mantle. The Tablelands Trail is rated easy, about 4 km return, and the scenic Route 431 between Woody Point and Trout River runs past it.
- Gros Morne Mountain. A trek to panoramic views from the top, for prepared hikers; check conditions with park staff first.
- The communities. Cow Head, Norris Point, Rocky Harbour, Trout River and Woody Point all sit beside the park, with places to stay and eat; Parks Canada's visitor planning page lists them.
A chauffeur who drives you across the island can also take you between these sights on arrival day if there is time. The 3 km walk to Western Brook Pond, however, is on foot for everyone.
The honest comparison: four ways to get there
Drive yourself in a rental. For most couples and confident drivers, this is the cheapest option, and it leaves you with a car in the park. The trade-off is nine hours behind the wheel, often straight after a long flight, and the same drive back.
Fly to Deer Lake. Parks Canada notes that Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF) is served by direct flights from St. John's, among other cities, and that several major car rental agencies operate there. Flying turns a nine-hour drive into a short flight plus a 30-minute drive to the park. For a couple on a tight schedule, this is often the smartest plan of all.
Take the bus. Parks Canada mentions a daily bus service across the island, and bus services from the town of Deer Lake to Gros Morne. It is the cheapest and slowest option, and works best for travellers with flexible time and light luggage.
Book a private chauffeured car. One vehicle, one driver who is not you, and the stops you choose. It is the most expensive option for two people, and it makes the most sense for a group or a family who would otherwise need a large rental, for travellers who do not want to drive after an overnight flight, for older travellers, and for anyone who wants to look out of the window at the island instead of the road.
| Option | What you pay for | Time on the road | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car, self-drive | Daily rental, fuel | About 9 hours driving, plus stops | Couples and confident drivers |
| Flight to Deer Lake plus rental | Airfare, rental at YDF | Short flight plus about 30 minutes | Tight schedules |
| Bus across the island | Bus fare | Longest, on a fixed schedule | Budget travellers, light luggage |
| Private chauffeured car | Fixed quote per vehicle | About 9 hours driving, with your stops | Families and groups up to 12, no driver in the party |
What a private car costs
A trip of this length is priced as a city to city car service in the web booker: enter the St. John's pickup and the exact Gros Morne address, such as your hotel in Rocky Harbour or Norris Point, choose the vehicle and date, and you get a fixed price per vehicle before you book. The price covers the chauffeur, the vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity.
For a sense of scale, our published St. John's prices for a day of driving are the full-day chauffeur rate, from US$810 in a business sedan, US$1,035 in a business SUV and US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter. A crossing of the island is longer than a city day and the vehicle has to return to St. John's, so the Gros Morne trip is quoted on its own rather than at that rate. The return journey, on whatever date you choose, is a separate booking.
The per-vehicle price is what makes the private car work for groups. A family of five with luggage fits in a business SUV, and up to 12 people with 12 bags fit in an Executive Sprinter. Dividing the quote by the number of travellers is simple arithmetic for comparison, but the booking is always one vehicle at one price. The fleet guide shows what each vehicle carries, and chauffeur vs car rental sets out the wider trade-offs.
Rides in St. John's are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer.
Choosing the vehicle for a cross-island day
Business SUV for a family or up to six adults with luggage, hiking packs and coats. It is the default for most Gros Morne trips.
First Class SUV for the same capacity with a more refined cabin, for a long day where comfort matters most.
Executive Sprinter for a group of up to 12 with 12 bags, such as a hiking club, an extended family or a tour group. See Sprinter van with driver and group transportation.
Ask for child seats when you book if you need them, with the children's ages, so they are fitted before the 7 a.m. departure.
Making the most of St. John's before you go
Many visitors spend two or three days in St. John's before crossing the island. A four-hour Cape Spear trip costs from US$405 in a business sedan to US$810 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle, and pairs well with Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi; our St. John's tours guide has itineraries for half and full days. If you are flying in, our St. John's airport taxi guide explains the YYT stand and when a pre-booked car is worth it, and our St. John's taxi guide covers getting around the city.
The full St. John's price list is on our St. John's car service page, including the YYT airport transfer from US$95 and private city tours. The nearest other Elly8.net city is Halifax. Frequently asked questions
How far is Gros Morne from St. John's?
About 700 km (440 mi) by road. Our routing from downtown St. John's to Rocky Harbour, inside the park, is about 711 km and a little under nine hours of driving on a clear road. With stops for fuel and meals, plan for 10 to 11 hours door to door.
Can you do Gros Morne as a day trip from St. John's?
No. The drive alone is around nine hours each way, so Gros Morne needs at least one night, and ideally two or three, to see Western Brook Pond and the Tablelands. Flying to Deer Lake, 30 minutes from the park, saves most of the travel time.
Where should we stop on the way?
Terra Nova National Park, about 250 km from St. John's, is the first natural break, with the highway running through it. Gander makes a good lunch stop around the halfway point, and Grand Falls-Windsor a fuel stop before the long stretch to Deer Lake.
How much does a private car from St. John's to Gros Morne cost?
It is quoted per vehicle in the web booker for your exact address and date, as a city to city trip. For scale, the St. John's full-day chauffeur rate starts at US$810 in a business sedan; the cross-island trip is longer and quoted separately. The price covers the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity.
When is the best time to visit Gros Morne?
The peak season runs from May to October, and the Western Brook Pond boat tour runs from mid-May to mid-October, with reservations recommended. The park is open year-round, but the Visitor Centre keeps reduced hours in the low season and some facilities close.
Is it better to fly to Deer Lake?
For a couple on a tight schedule, often yes. Deer Lake has direct flights from St. John's and car rental agencies at the airport, 30 minutes from the park. A private car from St. John's makes more sense for groups, families with lots of luggage, or travellers who want to see the island on the way.
