Quebec City to Charlevoix is about 95 km (59 miles) to Baie-Saint-Paul, roughly an hour and a half on a clear road, and about 143 km (89 miles) to La Malbaie, a little over two hours. The route follows Route 138 east along the north shore of the St. Lawrence, past Montmorency Falls and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, then climbs into the hills where Charlevoix begins and drops back down to the river at each village.
A private car suits this trip because the region is spread out and the best of it sits off the main road: an artist town at the head of a bay, a free ferry to an island, a village on a cliff, a grand hotel above the river. You can book a full day out and back, or a one-way transfer to a hotel in Charlevoix with your luggage. This guide from the Elly8.net desk gives the drive times, the stops and the honest alternatives.
How long is the drive from Quebec City to Charlevoix?
From Old Quebec, Baie-Saint-Paul is about 95 km (59 mi), roughly 1 hour 30 minutes on a clear road, and La Malbaie about 143 km (89 mi), roughly 2 hours 10 minutes, via Route 138. From Jean Lesage airport (YQB), add about 15 km. Snow, summer weekends and photo stops add time.
Those are our routed estimates for a clear road. In practice, a Charlevoix day is decided less by the kilometres than by the number of stops, and by the hills: the road climbs and falls steeply between the river villages, which is part of the scenery and part of the reason to let someone else drive.

The stops worth making
Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. About half an hour out of the city, the shrine is, in the words of Destination Quebec cite's shrine listing, the oldest pilgrimage site in North America, with a basilica best seen on a guided tour. It is an easy first stop that breaks the drive.
Petite-Riviere-Saint-Francois and Le Massif. The first village in Charlevoix is home to Le Massif de Charlevoix, the ski area above the river. Tourisme Charlevoix notes the village has only about 800 inhabitants. In winter this is the ski stop; the rest of the year, the views from the road are the point.
Baie-Saint-Paul. The town at the head of the bay is the heart of most day trips. Tourisme Charlevoix describes it as a place shaped by the mountains, the water and the artists and producers who live there, on its Baie-Saint-Paul page. Galleries, cheese makers, a long lunch: plan two to three hours.
The Crater and Tides sector. Les Eboulements, Saint-Irenee and Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive sit between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie, where the hills meet the shoreline. This is the scenic stretch, and the reason to take the road along the river rather than the fastest line.
Isle-aux-Coudres. From Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive, the ferry crosses to Isle-aux-Coudres, an island with about 23 km of shoreline landscapes, according to Tourisme Charlevoix. The Societe des traversiers du Quebec says the crossing is free of charge and takes no reservations, so allow time for the line in summer. The chauffeur drives the car aboard and around the island.
La Malbaie. The resort town is known for whale watching, outdoor activities and the Hotel-Casino de Charlevoix complex, where Tourisme Charlevoix's casino page places the casino alongside Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu. It is the usual end point for a one-way transfer.
A day trip or a one-way transfer?
A day out and back to Baie-Saint-Paul fits inside the 8-hour full-day chauffeur: about three hours of driving in total, plus Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre on the way out and a long stop in town. That costs from US$810 in a business sedan, US$1,035 in a business SUV and US$1,620 in an Executive Sprinter, per vehicle and all-in.
A day that reaches La Malbaie runs longer, because the return drive alone is more than four hours. Price it in the web booker for your date, or book hourly chauffeur service at US$110 an hour in a business sedan or US$220 in a Sprinter. As arithmetic only, ten hours at the sedan rate would be US$1,100.
A one-way transfer to a Charlevoix hotel is a city to city car service trip. Enter the hotel address in the web booker and it gives a fixed, all-in price before you pay. This is the simplest option for guests arriving at YQB for a stay in La Malbaie or Baie-Saint-Paul: the chauffeur tracks the flight, waits inside arrivals with a name board, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing, and drives straight out.
| Plan | How it is priced | From, business sedan | From, business SUV | From, Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full day to Baie-Saint-Paul and back | 8-hour full-day chauffeur | US$810 | US$1,035 | US$1,620 |
| Custom day, any length | By the hour, 3-hour minimum | US$110 per hour | US$140 per hour | US$220 per hour |
| One way to a Charlevoix hotel | Web booker, fixed before you pay | Quoted for your address | Quoted for your address | Quoted for your address |
| First, Montmorency Falls and Ile d'Orleans only | 6-hour package | US$610 | US$775 | US$1,215 |
Tolls, parking and waiting beyond the included time are billed at cost, and prices are always per vehicle. A group of eight in a Sprinter on the full day pays US$1,620 for the vehicle; as arithmetic for comparison only, that is about US$203 each.
A sample day, hour by hour
This is how a typical 8-hour Baie-Saint-Paul day fits together when nobody is rushing. Adjust it freely; the chauffeur works to your plan, not a script.
| Time | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 8:30 a.m. | Old Quebec hotel | Pickup at the door, east on Route 138 |
| 9:05 a.m. | Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre | 30 minutes at the basilica |
| 9:35 a.m. | The road into Charlevoix | Lookout stops above the river |
| 10:40 a.m. | Baie-Saint-Paul | Galleries, producers and lunch, about 3 hours |
| 1:40 p.m. | Les Eboulements | The shoreline road and a short stop |
| 2:20 p.m. | Return west | Straight back, or a pause for coffee |
| about 4:15 p.m. | Old Quebec | Drop-off at the hotel, inside the 8 hours |
Add Isle-aux-Coudres and the day grows by two to three hours with the ferry line, which is when hourly booking makes more sense than the full-day package. For a transfer to La Malbaie with luggage, the same stops work as a slower one-way run: the chauffeur waits at each one with your bags secure in the car, and the web booker includes the stops in the fixed price when you list them.
Lunch and tastings. Producers and restaurants in Baie-Saint-Paul fill up on summer and autumn weekends, so book the table before the car. If tastings are on the plan, the chauffeur follows local rules on alcohol in the vehicle; our wine tours page explains how those days are run.
The alternatives, fairly
The bus. Destination Quebec cite's getting-here page notes that Intercar links Quebec City with Charlevoix and the North Shore. For one traveller going to a single town and staying put, the bus is the budget choice.
Driving yourself. A rental gives you the same freedom as a chauffeur for less, and in summer it is a lovely drive. The trade-offs are the steep grades between the villages, winter conditions from late autumn, unfamiliar French road signs, and the fact that someone has to stay sober if the day includes the region's microbreweries, distilleries and cheese makers. See chauffeur vs car rental.
A coach tour. Scheduled tours from Quebec City suit solo travellers who want a guide and do not mind a fixed route. A chauffeur suits families, couples who want long lunches, groups who want one vehicle, and anyone who wants Isle-aux-Coudres or a hotel transfer in the same day.
Seasons in Charlevoix
Summer. Whale watching from the La Malbaie area, long evenings, and lines at the Isle-aux-Coudres ferry. Leave early on weekends.
Autumn. The hills turn colour along the river and on the Mountain Road, and Tourisme Charlevoix's blog collects fall activity ideas for families and couples. Book early for weekends in the colour season.
Winter. Skiing at Le Massif and quiet villages. The hills can be icy, and partner vehicles are equipped for the season; the desk confirms timing with you the evening before and moves the booking if a storm closes the road.
Spring. The quietest season on the roads, and a good time for a relaxed day of galleries and producers in Baie-Saint-Paul.
Making it part of a longer trip
Charlevoix pairs well with the rest of the region. On the way out, the 6-hour falls-and-island package is covered in Quebec City to Montmorency Falls: which way to go. In the city itself, see planning a chauffeured Quebec City tour. Arriving from Montreal first? Read Montreal to Quebec City by car, train or bus, or start from our Montreal car service page.
Companies holding a retreat or a conference at a Charlevoix hotel can move guests from YQB in Executive Sprinters under a corporate account with monthly invoicing; see conference transportation.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show, refunded to the original card.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Charlevoix from Quebec City?
Baie-Saint-Paul, the first main town, is about 95 km (59 mi) from Old Quebec, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes on a clear road. La Malbaie is about 143 km (89 mi), roughly 2 hours 10 minutes. Both are reached on Route 138 along the north shore of the St. Lawrence.
Can we do Charlevoix as a day trip from Quebec City?
Yes. Baie-Saint-Paul with a stop at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre fits the 8-hour full-day chauffeur, from US$810 in a business sedan. A day that reaches La Malbaie needs more time; price it in the web booker or book by the hour from US$110 an hour.
How much is a private transfer from Quebec City to La Malbaie?
Enter your pickup and your La Malbaie hotel in the Elly8.net web booker and it gives a fixed, all-in price for the vehicle before you pay, including the chauffeur, taxes and standard gratuity. Tolls, parking and extra waiting are billed at cost. The price is per vehicle, not per person.
Does the ferry to Isle-aux-Coudres cost extra?
The Societe des traversiers du Quebec lists the Isle-aux-Coudres to Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive ferry as free of charge, with no reservations, so it adds time rather than cost. In summer, allow for a wait in line. The chauffeur drives the car aboard and continues around the island.
Can you pick us up at Quebec City airport and drive straight to Charlevoix?
Yes. Add your flight number when you book. The chauffeur tracks the landing, meets you inside arrivals with a name board, and drives directly east. Baie-Saint-Paul is about 110 km (68 mi) from YQB, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes on a clear road.
Which vehicle is best for a Charlevoix day?
A business sedan suits up to 3 passengers, a business SUV up to 6 with room for coats, skis or shopping, and an Executive Sprinter up to 12 as one vehicle. For families with child seats or a winter trip with gear, the SUV gives the most comfort.
