Times Square New Year's Eve 2026-27 takes place on Thursday 31 December 2026, with the ball on One Times Square raised at about 6 p.m. and its 60-second descent beginning at 11:59 p.m. It is free, it needs no ticket for the street, and it shuts a large part of Midtown to cars for most of the day. Anyone who plans to arrive by car at 10 p.m. and leave by car at 12:05 a.m. will be disappointed.
Elly8.net books New Year's Eve in New York as a plan, not a ride: an airport pickup timed before the closures bite, a drop-off at the edge of the frozen zone, a chauffeur who holds outside it, and a pickup at a corner agreed in advance. Prices are fixed, all-in and the same on 31 December as on any other night. What changes is availability, so the desk asks guests to reserve early.
Can you take a car to Times Square on New Year's Eve?
Not into the square. Police close Seventh Avenue and Broadway from 38th to 59th Street to traffic from around 11 a.m., and Sixth and Eighth Avenues close from around 4 p.m. Book a drop-off outside the closed blocks, walk in from Sixth or Eighth Avenue, and arrange the return pickup at a corner well outside the zone.
The rules come from the Times Square Alliance New Year's Eve FAQ, published for the most recent celebration and the best guide to what 2026-27 will look like. Closures start early. From 4 a.m. on 31 December, Seventh Avenue closes to vehicles between 42nd and 48th Streets, along with the side streets from 43rd to 48th between Sixth and Eighth Avenues. Around 11 a.m. the closure widens to Seventh Avenue and Broadway from 38th to 59th Street. From around 4 p.m., Sixth and Eighth Avenues themselves close to pedestrians and vehicles, with crossings kept open at 41st, 44th, 47th, 50th, 54th and 57th Streets.
The Alliance also notes that closures move north block by block as the crowd arrives, at police discretion. That is the single most important fact for anyone using a car: the edge of the zone is not a fixed line, and a corner that is open at 7 p.m. may be closed at 9 p.m. A chauffeur on an hourly booking can move with it; a car hailed by app usually cannot reach you at all.

The New Year's Eve timeline in Midtown
Plan the day around the official schedule rather than the clock. The Alliance's published schedule for the last edition ran from 6 p.m. to 12:15 a.m., with the ball lit and raised between 6:00 and 6:03 p.m., performances through the evening, the sixty-second countdown at 11:59 p.m. and the end of the show at 12:15 a.m. The viewing areas open at 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis and fill during the afternoon; the live schedule page carries the running order once it is announced.
| Time on 31 December | What happens | What it means for your car |
|---|---|---|
| From 4 a.m. | Seventh Avenue closed 42nd to 48th Street, plus side streets 43rd to 48th between Sixth and Eighth | Hotel pickups inside these blocks are walked out to the avenue |
| Around 11 a.m. | Seventh Avenue and Broadway closed 38th to 59th Street | Midtown crosstown traffic slows; allow extra time from LaGuardia and JFK |
| 3 p.m. | Viewing areas open, first come, first served | Last practical window for a drop-off close to the zone |
| Around 4 p.m. | Sixth and Eighth Avenues close to pedestrians and vehicles | Drop-offs move further out; walk in at the published crossings |
| About 6 p.m. | Ball raised on One Times Square | The car parks or circulates outside the area on an hourly booking |
| 11:59 p.m. | 60-second descent | The chauffeur positions at the agreed pickup corner |
| 12:15 a.m. | End of show | Walk out of the zone to the car; expect dense crowds for an hour |
Times above are the Alliance's arrangements for the most recent celebration; the desk rechecks the official pages in late December.
Who travels for the ball drop, and how they use a car
New Year's Eve in New York draws three kinds of guests, and each needs a different booking.
Street viewers are the largest group. They arrive in the afternoon, stand for hours and leave after midnight. The Alliance lists what is not allowed: backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs, coolers and alcohol, and all bags are searched. There are no licensed food vendors and no portable restrooms, and if you leave your viewing area to eat you cannot return. For these guests the car is a transfer: from the hotel or the airport to a drop-off near Sixth or Eighth Avenue, and a pickup far enough out to escape the crowd at 12:15 a.m.
Party guests are booked into ticketed events at hotels and restaurants around the square. The Alliance names venues with a view of the ball, including the Marriott Marquis, the Renaissance New York and The Knickerbocker, and advises guests to contact their venue for entrance instructions, because access through the police checkpoints depends on them. It also warns against "all-access" multi-venue passes. A chauffeur needs your venue name and its instructions so the drop-off matches the entrance you have been given.
Dinner and private-event guests often avoid the square itself: a restaurant downtown, a private party in a townhouse, a rooftop in Brooklyn. Their car is the evening out and event night package, five hours with one chauffeur, priced from US$525 in a business sedan to US$1,050 in an Executive Sprinter.
Arriving in New York for New Year's Eve
A flight that lands at 2 p.m. on the 31st heads into a city where Broadway and Seventh Avenue are already closed through Midtown. Land the day before if you can.
Elly8.net chauffeurs track the flight and meet you inside arrivals with a name board, with complimentary waiting after a tracked landing. Fixed prices per vehicle, all-in:
| Airport | Distance to Midtown | Clear-road drive | Business Sedan | Business SUV | Executive Sprinter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LaGuardia (LGA) | 9 mi (14 km) | about 17 min | US$145 | US$190 | US$380 |
| JFK | 18 mi (29 km) | about 29 min | US$210 | US$275 | US$550 |
| Newark Liberty (EWR) | 19 mi (31 km) | about 34 min | US$215 | US$280 | US$560 |
| Teterboro (TEB) | 12 mi (20 km) | about 25 min | US$170 | US$225 | US$445 |
Clear-road times are rarely seen on New Year's Eve; plan on at least double in the afternoon. First Class sedans and SUVs are on the New York price list too, from US$235 at LaGuardia to US$380 at Newark. Round trips start at US$280 from LaGuardia. Guests flying privately into Teterboro are met at the FBO named in the booking; see private jet and FBO transfers. For the detail on how airport pickups run, read airport transfers.
If your hotel sits inside the closed blocks, the car cannot reach its door after the early closures. The chauffeur meets you at the nearest open avenue corner, and the desk confirms that corner by text before the pickup.
The plan for the night: drop-off, standby and the midnight pickup
The pattern that works is simple, and it starts from where the crowd is not.
The drop-off. Choose the side of the square you are heading to. The Alliance's guidance is to enter from Sixth Avenue for destinations east of Broadway and from Eighth Avenue for destinations west of it, at the nearest cross street, with viewing-area access points at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets from both avenues. After 4 p.m., when both avenues close, the car drops you on an open street beyond them and you walk in at a published crossing. Allow time for bag searches.
The standby. On an hourly booking the chauffeur stays with the job: parked or circling outside the closures, reachable by phone and text. Hourly rates in New York run from US$105 in a business sedan to US$210 in an Executive Sprinter, with a three-hour minimum. For a long evening, the five-hour event package or the eight-hour full-day chauffeur (from US$775 to US$1,550) is simpler to budget.
The pickup. Agree a corner in advance, several blocks outside the zone, and walk to it. Corners east of Sixth Avenue or west of Eighth Avenue are the usual choice, settled with the chauffeur on the night according to where the police lines actually are. Expect to walk ten to twenty minutes after the show ends; the crowd leaves through a limited number of streets at once. The chauffeur sends the exact position when the car is in place.
After midnight. If the evening continues downtown or across the river, the same car takes you on. The chauffeur follows local rules on drinks in vehicles.
Groups, families and corporate hosts
New Year's Eve groups move together or not at all. An Executive Sprinter keeps a family or a client party in one vehicle from LaGuardia to the hotel, and later from the hotel to the edge of the zone; the LGA transfer is US$380 per vehicle and the hourly rate US$210. For larger parties the desk books several vehicles under one reference and staggers them so they do not queue at the same corner. See group transportation and the Sprinter van with driver page.
Companies hosting clients at a hotel party can put every car on a corporate account with monthly invoicing. Travel agents and concierge teams arranging New Year's Eve packages can book through travel-agent accounts and hotel accounts. Elly8.net books the car only; flights and hotel rooms can be arranged through our travel partner BookingWorldwide.net.
Taxi, rideshare, subway or a pre-booked car: an honest comparison
The subway is the official recommendation for getting to Times Square on New Year's Eve, and for most street viewers it is the right answer. The Alliance lists the lines serving the area and extra service on many of them, but it also asks guests to avoid the Times Square-42 St station: its 42nd Street entrances close around 10 a.m., the 49 St station on the N, R and W and the 50 St station on the 1 are bypassed from about noon until about 12:15 a.m., and riders are told to exit at a nearby station and walk in.
| Option | Cost | Best for | Weak point on New Year's Eve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subway | Standard fare | Street viewers, light bags, flexible timing | Stations near the square bypassed or partly closed; very crowded after midnight |
| Yellow taxi from JFK | US$70 flat to Manhattan, plus surcharges, tolls and tip | One or two travellers arriving the day before | Cannot reach the closed blocks; long lines on the night |
| App ride | Dynamic price set at request | A short off-peak hop earlier in the day | Pickups near the square are impractical after midnight and prices can rise sharply |
| Elly8.net hourly chauffeur | From US$105 per hour, 3-hour minimum | Hotel parties, families, groups, clients, late dinners | Must be booked ahead; New Year's Eve books out early |
The taxi figure is the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission flat fare between JFK and Manhattan, before surcharges, the airport access fee, tolls and tip. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, the JFK AirTrain at US$8.75 plus the subway is the cheapest way into the city. A pre-booked car makes sense when there are several of you, when you carry bags to a hotel inside the closures, when a client or a family is waiting, or when you want a known price and a driver who answers the phone at 12:20 a.m. For the general comparisons, see chauffeur vs Uber and Lyft and Uber Black vs a pre-booked chauffeur.
New Year's Day and the rest of the holiday
New Year's Day suits a private city tour, from US$420 in a business sedan, or the 10-hour Hamptons day trip from US$970. Guests moving on can book a city-to-city car service to Westchester and Greenwich, The Hamptons, Philadelphia or Atlantic City, and travellers heading up the coast can continue to Hartford or Providence.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a car service in New York on New Year's Eve?
The same as any other night. A JFK transfer to Midtown is from US$210 in a business sedan to US$550 in an Executive Sprinter, LaGuardia from US$145, and hourly cars from US$105 per hour with a three-hour minimum. The five-hour evening package is from US$525. All prices are fixed and all-in per vehicle; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Where will the chauffeur drop me off for the ball drop?
At an open street outside the police closures, on the side of the square you are heading to. The Alliance's guidance is to enter from Sixth Avenue for destinations east of Broadway and Eighth Avenue for destinations west of it. Because closures move as the crowd grows, the chauffeur confirms the exact corner on the day.
Where do I meet the car after midnight?
At a corner agreed in advance, several blocks outside the closed area, usually east of Sixth Avenue or west of Eighth Avenue. Walk out of the crowd to it; expect ten to twenty minutes on foot. The chauffeur texts the car's exact position, and the 24/7 desk can connect you if you cannot find each other.
When should I book New Year's Eve transportation?
As soon as your plans are set. New York has a finite number of chauffeured cars and 31 December is one of the busiest nights of the year. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; at 72 hours or less the fee is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or a no-show 100%, refunded to the original card.
Can the car wait for me all evening?
Yes, on an hourly booking or the five-hour and eight-hour packages. The chauffeur stays outside the closures and moves with them, reachable by phone. Waiting beyond the included time on a transfer is billed at cost, so for an evening with an uncertain finish an hourly booking is the better choice.
Can you take a group of ten to a hotel party?
Yes. An Executive Sprinter keeps the group together, at US$380 from LaGuardia or US$210 per hour in town. For larger groups the desk books several vehicles under one reference. Give us the venue's entrance instructions so the drop-off matches the checkpoint your tickets allow.
Do you offer child seats on New Year's Eve?
Yes, on request at the time of booking. Tell the desk the ages of the children so the right seats are fitted before pickup.
