The Netherlands is small and its motorways are good, so almost every classic Amsterdam day trip is within about an hour of the canal ring by road. The windmills of the Zaanse Schans are 22 minutes away, the Keukenhof tulip gardens about 39 minutes, The Hague under an hour and Kinderdijk about an hour and a half, all by our routed estimates on a clear road. A private driver links two or three of them in one day, which is where a car beats the train.
The Elly8.net signature Amsterdam day is a 6-hour package to the Zaanse Schans and Volendam, from US$500 per vehicle in a business sedan to US$995 in an Executive Sprinter. Longer days, such as The Hague and Delft or Rotterdam and Kinderdijk, are booked as a full-day chauffeur from US$665, and short outings like Keukenhof by the hour from US$90 with a 3-hour minimum. Every price is fixed and per vehicle.
What is the best day trip from Amsterdam?
For a first visit, the Zaanse Schans windmills and the harbour town of Volendam make the classic half-to-full day, and it is our 6-hour signature package. In spring, Keukenhof's flower gardens are the draw. For art and history, The Hague and Delft; for windmill landscapes, Kinderdijk with Rotterdam.
The table below compares the main routes. Distances and times are routed estimates from the canal ring on a clear road, from the public OSRM router; they are not traffic forecasts.
| Day trip | Route and distances (routed) | How to book | Price per vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zaanse Schans and Volendam | 18 km to Zaanse Schans (22 min), 25 km on to Volendam (23 min), 24 km back (31 min) | 6-hour package | US$500 to US$995 |
| Keukenhof (spring only) | 36 km / 22 mi, about 39 min each way | Hourly, 3-hour minimum | from US$90 per hour |
| Keukenhof and Haarlem | Keukenhof to Haarlem 26 km (28 min), Haarlem to Amsterdam 22 km (30 min) | Hourly or full day | from US$90 per hour |
| The Hague and Delft | 59 km to The Hague (55 min), 14 km to Delft (15 min), 62 km back (58 min) | Full-day chauffeur | US$665 to US$1,325 |

Zaanse Schans and Volendam: the signature day
The Zaanse Schans is an open-access heritage village on the river Zaan, with working windmills, green wooden houses, craft workshops and small museums. It is about 18 km (11 mi) north of the canal ring, roughly 22 minutes by road. The site itself advises that parking at and around the Zaanse Schans is limited, which is one practical reason a car with a driver works well: you are dropped at the entrance and collected when you are ready.
From there the route continues about 25 km (15 mi) east to Volendam, the old fishing harbour on the IJsselmeer, roughly 23 minutes away. The small cheese town of Edam is only about 3 km (2 mi) further, an easy add-on. The drive back to the canal ring is about 24 km (15 mi), roughly 31 minutes.
The 6-hour package costs:
| Zaanse Schans and Volendam, 6 hours | Price per vehicle, all-in | Seats and bags (fleet page) |
|---|---|---|
| Business Sedan | US$500 | 3 passengers, 2 large bags |
| Business SUV | US$635 | 6 passengers, 6 bags |
| First Class SUV | US$750 | 6 passengers, 6 bags |
| First Class Sedan | US$805 | 3 passengers, 2 large bags |
| Executive Sprinter | US$995 | 12 passengers, 12 bags |
The price includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost. Shared by six in a business SUV, it works out to about US$106 each; shared by twelve in a Sprinter, about US$83 each. That is arithmetic for comparison only, because Elly8.net prices are always per vehicle.
Keukenhof and the bulb fields in spring
Keukenhof's flower gardens at Lisse open only in spring. According to Keukenhof, the 2027 season runs from 18 March to 9 May, daily from 8:00 to 19:00. The park is about 36 km (22 mi) south-west of the canal ring, roughly 39 minutes on a clear road, and only about 21 km (13 mi) from Schiphol, so some travellers visit on their arrival or departure day.
Entry is by ticket, so buy yours first and then book the car. A 4-hour booking by the hour costs US$360 in a business sedan (4 × US$90), or US$460 in a business SUV (4 × US$115), by simple arithmetic. Weekend traffic to the bulb region is heavy at the height of the season, so a weekday morning is the easier visit.
Add Haarlem. Haarlem's old centre is about 26 km (16 mi) from Keukenhof, roughly 28 minutes, and about 22 km (14 mi) from Amsterdam. Keukenhof in the morning, lunch in Haarlem and back to Amsterdam by late afternoon makes a relaxed spring day on the hourly rate or the full-day booking.
The Hague and Delft: Vermeer and Dutch government
The Hague is the seat of the Dutch government and home to the Mauritshuis, the museum whose collection includes Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft, and Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp. It is about 59 km (37 mi) from the canal ring, roughly 55 minutes by road.
Delft, the town of the blue-and-white pottery and of Vermeer himself, is about 14 km (9 mi) from The Hague, around 15 minutes. Its compact old centre around the market square is best on foot. The drive back to Amsterdam is about 62 km (38 mi), roughly 58 minutes.
This is a full day. Book it as a full-day chauffeur, from US$665 in a business sedan, US$850 in a business SUV, US$995 in a First Class SUV, US$1,070 in a First Class Sedan and US$1,325 in an Executive Sprinter. The car waits outside each town centre while you walk, and if the coast tempts you, the seaside at Scheveningen is part of The Hague.
Rotterdam and Kinderdijk: windmill landscapes and modern architecture
Kinderdijk is one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Netherlands, a landscape of historic windmills and pumping stations that tells the story of Dutch water management, according to Kinderdijk. It sells tickets and route options for visits of an hour or more. By road it is about 15 km (9 mi) from central Rotterdam, roughly 25 minutes, and about 85 km (53 mi) from Amsterdam.
Rotterdam, about 75 km (47 mi) and 70 minutes from the canal ring, rebuilt itself after the Second World War as the country's modern city, with striking architecture, the Markthal food hall and Europe's largest port. Its tourist board, Rotterdam Info, lists what to see.
Combining the two is a full day, and it is a route that is far easier by car than by public transport, because Kinderdijk is in the countryside. If you are travelling on to Belgium afterwards, the same stops fit a one-way transfer; see our guide to the Brussels to Amsterdam transfer.
Closer outings and longer drives
Utrecht. About 45 km (28 mi) and 52 minutes away, Utrecht has canals with wharf-level cellars and a medieval cathedral tower. It suits an afternoon on the hourly rate.
Muiden. The castle of Muiderslot, about 19 km (12 mi) east of the canal ring, roughly 26 minutes, makes a short outing for families.
Marken. The former island village is about 26 km (16 mi) from Amsterdam, roughly 37 minutes, and pairs naturally with Volendam.
Giethoorn. The car-free village of canals and thatched farmhouses is about 118 km (74 mi), roughly an hour and three-quarters away. It is a long day, booked as a full-day chauffeur.
Package, full day or hourly: which booking?
Zaanse Schans and Volendam, 6 hours. The simplest choice for a first visit: a fixed price for the classic route.
Full-day chauffeur. The car and driver as directed, from US$665 in a business sedan to US$1,325 in a Sprinter. Use it for The Hague and Delft, Rotterdam and Kinderdijk, or Giethoorn.
By the hour, 3-hour minimum. From US$90 in a business sedan, US$115 in a business SUV, US$135 in a First Class SUV, US$145 in a First Class Sedan and US$180 in an Executive Sprinter. Best for Keukenhof, Utrecht or Muiderslot. See car service by the hour.
Private city highlights tour. If you would rather stay in Amsterdam, the city tour costs from US$360 in a business sedan to US$720 in a Sprinter, covering Museumplein, the canal ring, the Jordaan and the waterfront with stops where you choose. See private city tours.
| Group | Vehicle | Zaanse Schans and Volendam | Full day | Arithmetic per person (full day) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple | Business Sedan | US$500 | US$665 | about US$333 each |
| Family of four | Business SUV | US$635 | US$850 | about US$213 each |
| Six friends | First Class SUV | US$750 | US$995 | about US$166 each |
| Group of twelve | Executive Sprinter | US$995 | US$1,325 | about US$110 each |
The per-person column is arithmetic for comparison only; Elly8.net prices are per vehicle, never per person.
Timing and practical tips
Start after the morning rush. The A10 ring road and the motorways out of Amsterdam are busy on weekday mornings. Leaving the canal ring around 9 a.m. usually works.
Book timed tickets first. Keukenhof, the Mauritshuis and Kinderdijk all sell tickets; book them, then tell the desk your entry times so the pickup works backwards from them.
Watch the calendar. King's Day, usually 27 April, turns central Amsterdam into a street party with road closures, so avoid scheduling a day trip that has to leave or return through the centre that day. In spring, bulb-season weekends bring heavy traffic around Lisse.
Think about the canal-belt pickup. The canal ring's narrow streets limit where cars can stop, so the chauffeur collects you at the nearest legal point to your hotel; tell us if anyone in the party has limited mobility.
Combine with an airport run. Keukenhof and the Zaanse Schans are both close to Schiphol, about 21 km and 28 km by road. A day trip can start with an airport transfer and a meet and greet inside arrivals, or end at the departures kerb. Our guide to Amsterdam airport to city centre options covers the arrival itself.
Choosing the vehicle
Couples usually take the business sedan, or the First Class Sedan for an anniversary or a client day. Families of four to six choose the business SUV, which leaves room for a stroller, coats and cheese bought in Edam. The First Class SUV gives the same space with a more formal finish. Groups of seven to twelve, including wedding guests and incentive groups, take the Executive Sprinter, so everyone travels together and nobody waits for a second car at a windmill car park with limited spaces. If anyone in the party has limited mobility, tell the desk when you book; the chauffeur plans set-down points with the shortest walk and the desk can suggest the flatter sites, such as Keukenhof and the Zaanse Schans, over the cobbled town centres.
How booking works
Rides in Amsterdam are operated by licensed, commercially insured local chauffeur partners vetted through the Limousine Worldwide network; Elly8.net takes the booking, fixes the price and runs the 24/7 desk. Partner vehicles are four model years old or newer, or seven for Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley.
Choose the package, the full day or the hourly booking on the Amsterdam page, pick the vehicle, and press Reserve now to pay by card in US dollars, or use the web booker for any other route. Add your stops and ticket times in the notes. Child seats are available on request. Confirmation comes by email. Every price includes the chauffeur, vehicle, taxes and standard gratuity; tolls and parking are billed at cost.
Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show; refunds go to the original card.
Travel advisers can book clients through travel agent accounts and hotel concierges through hotel accounts. For app rides and taxis in the city, read Uber in Amsterdam.
